From what I gathered on the Tau Online's forums, it appears that the Kroot aren't the only mercenaries in the Tau's service.

FINALLY!
That was my geuss upon seeing the picture aswell. It is high time that we started to see more intelligent aliens in the 40K universe aside from just Eldar, Tyranids, and Orks (who barely count).
I hope that they are a new intelligent mercenary or allied of the Tau. Better still if they got their own mini-codex, but I'm not going to hold my breath regard thing that.

The Tau Empire is made up of multiple races that owe varying degrees of fealty to the Tau. Most of these races have never been detailed. The only ones I can name are:
Kroot - Technically an "allied" race that hires its troops out as mercenaries and not as a tithe. The Kroot were already an interstellar civilization before they met the Tau, and still pursue their own goals in violation of their agreements with the Tau.
Humans - A "subject" race in the Tau Empire, dependent on the Empire for defense and interstellar communication and travel. The Humans of the Empire are refugees and PoWs that the Tau have adopted and set up with their own worlds. They provide ground troops to the Tau military.
Demiurg - (Commonly thought to be the revised Squats.) There are no details on exactly where the Demiurg come from, but their trade and manufacturing ships can be found in many places along the Eastern Fringe. Other than Orks (whom they hate) they are friendly with most races, but they seem to be especially close with the Tau and their ships are often hire out to Tau fleets as mercenaries.
Nicassar - The first subject race in the Tau Empire, the Nicassar are a race of powerful psychics. They are not warlike creatures but do provide ships for the Tau fleet. The Tau try to keep the Nicassar away from the Imperium to avoid arousing their typical anti-psyker fanaticism.
Undoubtedly there are others that have not been detailed yet. I agree that this picture does look like another race of auxiliaries is being added. |

Thanks for the link bots.
The Vespid look great. I was afraid that they might look dumb when the model finally appeared. I'm glad GW has delivered more of their good work on these guys. But how do they work? Do they only come with that one weapon? It's a flamer right?
And what are those things on the sides of their heads? Are they part of their heads or some kind of Tau communication gear?

| Since the nose of their weapon doesn't have the recognizable look of anything standard, it probably has novel game mechanics. I did some searching and the most detailed unfounded rumor says that the weapon is S2, AP3 and auto-kills models with T4 or lower. Rumor also has it that Stealth Suits are being redone and the 4th Edition Tau Codex is slated for release in February. |

I was wondering about the look of the weapons. I thought that maybe the sculptor just wasn't faithful to the stock look of GW weapon conventions. I know that seems unlikely, especially considering how GW has become so consistant about these things in recent years. But still stuff happens. Just look at all the variations of boltguns that have appeared over the years. Also note how the new necromunda miniatures in recent years have departed from the very established conventions for the weapons being depicted. For instance the wacky double barrel Goliath heavy stubber. Or the Orlock missile launcher that follows no previous GW pattern for that weapon.
All though, maybe they do have some completely new weapon. It wouldn't surprise me over much. Though how is a S2 weapon supposed to auto-kill things so easily? By "auto-kill" is it meant they get no armor saves or multiple wounds are ignored or what?

"Autokill" in this case means that if you take one wound from the weapon, you lose all your wounds. For example, a 3-wound Space Marine hero (T4) hit by one Krak Missile (S8) immediately loses all three wounds and dies if the missile manages to inflict one wound. (If you are wounded by a weapon who's Strength is double your Toughness, you're toast no matter how many wounds you have. The same thing happens if a psyker connects with a Force Weapon attack and makes his psionic check.)
The Vespid weapon is rumored to be considered S8 for purposes of the auto- or insta-kill.
A weapon with excellent AP but low strength would operate almost entirely on the opponent's Toughness. It would be worthless against vehicles and monsterous creatures but bad news for wimpy (T3) creatures in good armor (Tau, Imperial Storm Troopers, Eldar).
Looking at the miniatures, it appears that the gun houses some kind of rough, irregular object in the nose. The "leader" Vespid with the helmet has a bigger "thing" in his gun. Might these be rocks? Potatoes? Or even living organisms?
Not sure what to think about the new Crisis Suits. For the Broadside a beefier design makes sense. I like the old fragile looking ones better in general though. |
