Post subject:  Custom Miniatures with 3d printing

Hello Eastern Fringe Folk
I love Necromunda in a deep and dark way but never have the funds to feed my endless hunger for miniatures. When shopping around for miniatures I realized that It would be cheaper for me to digitally sculpt my own and have them 3D printed at Shapeways. I sculpted 3 figures and some terrain only to find that they were slightly off Necromunda scale.

I made the mistake of creating them to be 28mm rather than heroic 28mm which is closer to 30mm. Anyway, I've worked out the scale issues, sculpted some more models

And printed them out to ensure proper scale (forgive my lame paint job).

They can be found at
Gang War Miniatures Image
I am posting because I would value feedback from the eastern fringe community. The 3d printing process makes it very easy to make new or multiple versions of a miniature because they are all printed to order and not from a pre-made mold. What I would like to know is

What can I improve on the current Miniatures?

What miniatures would you like to see made? (I'm thinking of working on scavvies or pit slaves next)

Lager pieces like the Water Still and the junk piles can be printed with "white strong and flexible" which is cheaper. Are there other large scale bits of terrain you'd like to see made?

To be clear, I am taking requests. If it seems like a figure or model that a few people could be interested in, I am game. Please keep in mind that they need to be grouped, as they are, in order to keep their price down. There is an automatic fee attributed to printing any model which is more affordable when you attach a few of them with a sprue.

Thank you in advance for your feedback and for checking my post!

hold ona second while i potentionally jizz my pants, but are you producing actual models? sorry im not familiar with it all. so can you create a custom gang for the clients needs? how much would say 15 unique models be? i would love a group of spartan law enforcers. hell id would even consider a space marine army all based on the master chief!! please feed us with more information. or i would love some other minis that are unavailable, tyranids and necrons especially. or an alien queen for a hive tyrant!

Hi Squevil. Yes, I am producing actual models, but the sculpting process is not quite streamlined enough for me to churn out an entire gang to order. IT takes me about two days to finish a Miniature. I started sculpting because I wanted to fill the void of miniatures that are either hard to come by or were never created. My thought behind the Scavenger Mod pack was because of the huge Scavvie modding community on this site. They have done amazing things with pieces that were not designed for it and I wanted to see what they could do with specific scavvie parts. This was a hole in the production of figures that I thought needed filling. This way, no one has to pay through the nose for a figure. I just take a small commission off of each figure ordered. Affordable for gamers and I still get a little money back to buy figures of my own. That being said, what figures would you like to see made? Right now I'm focusing on Necromunda style figures rather than 40k. If the requests are high enough for 40k I could branch out.

P.S. i will look in to the reality of producing runs of a gang and post here as soon as I figure it out.

What you're doing is so cool.

I'd love to see some more weapons sprues, particularly one containing variations of autopistols and autoguns.

I miss not being able to get my hands on some of the old Orlocks, which were always my favourite gang. I'm not a fan of the newer minis, so I'd be keen to see your take on them.

I like how you've provided Cawdor and Delaque with gangers holding pistols and ccws, too. More of that if you please!

Very nice if a little slim gangers.. but question needs to be asked..
How in the name of god those trenchcoats keep on their breasts ???

I like your gangers, but i would make their legs aand arms a little better build.

Another upgrade would be to release bodies without hands, like old school GW metal models and extra plastic hand sets.

As to weapons frame - lasguns are in plentiful and dirt cheap numbers, you should switch laspistol with autopistol and lasgun with shotgun or autogun (shotgun is more interesting )

And getting to terrain..
Barrel piece is has much to many skulls for my liking..

Mutant parts are most interesting i like them as is
I would buy them and chick gangers (although i would go with bra and more natural coat if i had to made gang from them (and Delaque chicks are tempting now.

So basically 3 things:
- more build legs (more sexy chick than anorectic supermodel thin) and more religious fanatic than anorexic starving cultists :)

- better convertibility bu removing hands from torsos, and better planned weapon accessory sets (really lasguns and laspistols are cheaper in bits sites than here)

- less is more with skulls, and naked tits. Heresy Delaques are cool because their coats are acting naturally even in most aggressive posed models. So natural looking coats are worth much more than naked tities under unnatural coats :)

I will buy them when i find some shipping info and they wont rob me on it :)

Thank you both for the feedback! My wife had the same comment about how the trench coats stay closed. As far as how tiny they are, Didn't realize that GW minis were so chunky and dense. The size of all the limbs, hands and heads is massive compared to actual proportions of a human. I'm probably going to release larger proportion versions but they will most likely cost a bit more because of the extra use of printing materials.

Did you play Confrontation (old ?) or at least poses any models ?

They have similar slim aesthetics and they were very difficult to work with, some of the parts were to thin to be pinned, and they could snap if pressed or when falling..

Best way to go is to keep compatibility with as many as possible GW components.

If you want to keep topless and coat i suggest some king of button around under breast level

but i think coat&bra direction would be more interesting:

It's a big good new, that you make this kind of models

I'm seeing with some French Necromunders, for any proposition of new model, but I agree with some specifications about the Trenchcoat women too for the moment : bra or /and buttons would be more realistics.

Your scale should be one or two percĀ° more to looks-like GW' ones ; check for scales with others creators on this site, there is for Space marines (hem, Star Marines ^^) and GI 8-)

Even the beasts of Underhive can be usefull, like Giants Rats, Centipeds, and so on.

Good-looking old-school-Scavvies, as they are represented in Outlander, would be a superb collection : with some "Smileys", custom armors, some... warts and more aesthetic mutations :-o

I follow this, Omahe.

This is really cool, and very promising. Your 3d modelling skills seem to be pretty above average so that gets you well started.

However (and I'm sure you are aware of this) you need to be careful with what you name your products. Outright saying that they are for Necromunda may get you into legal trouble with GW, and the design of your weapons as bolters, lasguns etc. almost certainly will get you into trouble if they notice you are doing it. This has been occurring with other sites that sell conversion bits or alternatives to GW miniatures. Most now get around it just by using generic names eg. "Sci Fi Gang Warfare miniatures".

We do seem to be on the brink of some very profound changes with 3d printing, and the legal situation may get complex, but it would be a tragedy for you to get into legal trouble over this.

EDIT: I notice that on your site you are using generic names, but in your sig for example you explicitly mention Necromunda!

So what exactly are they made out of then? I could give you a list as long as my arm of stuff I'd like to see, female Orlocks for a start and close combat Cawdor (flails and mallets mainly). :D
I'd love to see more scum (like an Esher with two bolt pistols and a bottle of vino), and wyrds. To be honest though if GW get a slight whiff of IP raping then your project is done! That said Hasslefree have got away with it with their totally delaque gangers. What I'm really saying is stuff you can't get! gunfighter Delaque models, beserker Goliaths with double handed weapons, a female Pit Slave (phwooar), and underhive critters too!

Thanks for all the input gang! I'm pumped to get new and improved models up! To answer the question about the material they are printed with, here is a picture of the unpainted Scavvies I'm working on. They are glued on to a mixture of crappy judge dredd figures, some zombies and some 40k minis but you get the idea of the mod pack and the material.
As you can see, I was able to razor it down and glue it on to figures. It's slightly more brittle than standard miniature plastic but I only noticed that when cutting it. <br>

Info on the material (frosted Ultra Detail) can also be found

I did some conversion to one of the figures based on some of your feedback. I think that they will blend in with official miniatures more now. The new version is the more bulky figure to the right in each pairing. Thoughts?

For Bolt Pistols, it is a SM weapon normaly, they HAVE to be huge and heavies : You should make it bigger, even for a woman ganger.

This is very very good work ; I'll buy few of them as they will be all remaked with these Bras ; )
