If you could live in any 1 particular science fiction setting or timeline, which one would you live?

For example, if you like the idea of being a citizen in a large inter-galactic Empire rules by ultra-religious fundamentalists, then I suppose you'd pick the 40K universe. Then spend the rest of your days living under the protection/scrutiny of the Holy Emperor of Terra. (Unless of course you don't want to be human, then join the Tau or Eldar.)

Personally, I think the Star Trek (Next Generation) setting would be the most conducive to the average "Joe Citizen".

What say you, oh wise persons of the Eastern Fringe?

Of the top of my head either the galaxy of Firefly: its like the old west, but with spaceships as well (if this question had been about historical settings, i'd have said the old west). Or China Mieville's Bas Lag, though thats more steampunk.

Hmm... It's hard to say, really. I'd probably go for the post-apocalyptic world of the Rifts RPG, myself - magic, psychic powers, giant robots, and much of the world no longer populated? Finally, I can go on a decent adventure without having to resort to videogames!

I'd have to agree with the Dr. on this one. Star Trek TNG is certainly the most positive experience in the Sci-Fi genre. While 40k, Star Wars, and Firefly to a lesser degree, are certainly interesting/exciting and action-packed... the normal human existence is really quite miserable. trek at least tries to put forth the idea of a utopia-like destination in the Terran societal evolution.

If I had to be a member of the general populace, then I would probably go with something safe and boring... The Federation in Star Trek would certainly qualify. Something similar would be Phil Foglio's Gallimaufry setting where the Law Machines know what you're doing. As much as I like dark and dangerous settings in fiction, I wouldn't enjoy being one of the common people there.
Now if I could choose my position within the setting... well, that would be different.

Isn't the Federation really just a fancy way of saying, "Socialist state"?

Because, they have no money, everyone works, the Federation takes care of them, military service is an honorable thing, and no one is concerned with owning material wealth.

-Hmmm.....

Perhaps Roddenberry was a closet fascist/socialist.
:alien

I'd like to live in the realm Eve Online is set in. How cool would it be, plugging your brain into a spaceship? Plus, with their cloning technology, you'd be practically immortal. No more having to worry about unpleasant things like death get in the way of an adventure.

i wouldnt be human

id be a caelmacht warrior and be in the army for afew years and fight the sylvanian empire and help protect koral from those werid energy draining people who once rocked up to make the koren slaves but then a caelmacht warfleet rocked up and sent half their army down to koral and killed all the werid people and toutured and mutilated the surving enemies

i heard that the caelmacht are even trying to find out where their home planet is and start a terrorist and guerilla war by using caelmacht assassins and (&#$@!) to make the werid peoples slaves rebell against them and finally kill their royal family

politics is very nasty

especially when war mad warrior races like the caelmacht are involved

by the way

vulcans are gay

I would have to Shiver85 and go with Firefly.

If I had to go with the Star Trek next generation I would want to be a Klingon.

Personally, I would probably want to be in the Battle Tech universe. the planet in particular I cant remember the name of, but is in the Mechwarrior 1 game! Its basically a "pleasure" planet if i remember correctly, filled with all things pleasurable in the 31st century!!!
Failing that, I was always quite partial to the Shadowrun universe for some reason. Hmmmmm BTL chips........ :-o

I'd take the plain ol' 40k universe, please.

I'd just be a devious, squigar-chompin', axe slingin', grog drinkin', bolter blastin', flak-jacket wearin', buggy racin', humie killin' Blood Axe boy. Have me one of them classy gray Civil War hats... It'd be great.

Basically, just plain ol' me with green skin, a thicker skull and pointy teef.

I'm probably gonna die young here anyway...
