I would recommend Zombies or Ghouls, Cavalry, and another hero/spell caster.

YOu need to have plenty of dispel-ability when fighting certain armies.

Also, having interception units, like cavalry will be most beneficial.

YOu can use the Vargulf to attack artillery crew and rear guard dispel wizards.

Then you can have your own throw-away units intercept cavalry charges, while your REAL attack units hit them in the flank.

I don't recommend crap like the Corpse Cart or Black Coach.

You may not need those, but you really need to have some cavalry.

VC's aren't strong enough to play the defensive role in a game. You need to play it with carefully planned attacks.

You will have trouble fighting slow defensive armies like Dwarfs and Empire. Hopefully, your fear causing units will really shine against them, I don't know what the current rules say about that.

I haven't played WFB since 2001, so please take my advice with a grain of salt.

I don't have the new Vampire Counts army book yet. Do Necrarchs still exist? I always liked the idea of an army skeletons and zombies of raised from the armies he had defeated. Not just human zombies. An equal opportunity employer. And the Necrarch just fit that bill better than Blood Dragons and the Counts.

I believe that vampire clans (Necrarch, Strigoi, & Lamia) have been eliminated from the fluff and rules.

I haven't read the army book yet though.

Yeah figures. Lets dumb the game down for the lowest common denominator. Streamlining is all well and good but, blah.

.... I'll figure a way to make my Lord a Count Orlock lookin freak somehow.. lol

I'd argue that with the vampire abilities you can now choose, you can still put together your old vampire lines or pretty close to, or you can make up new ones as you go along.

I didn't read the old Vampire Counts rules, but I'd say the new ones have got massive potential for having lots of fun during army creation :)

I've actually beefed up my army since this first post.....I've only lost two games out of the nine I've played with them...both against Bretonians...

Three 20 man untis of Skeletons
10 Black Knights
4 Spirit Hosts
10 Dire Wolves
1 Vargulf
20 Grave Guard
3 Vampre Heros
I vampire Lord
1 Corpse Cart

And like 50 zombies that I just raise to piss off my opponents!

:P

Vampire Counts is Undead, Tomb Kings is a separate list.

I just started Fantasy myself. I looked hard at doing a Vampire Counts army, but decided that they played too differently compared to most armies. For my first army, I would rather have one that doesn't have so many exceptions to the basic rules. VC also have to buy a lot of models to get going, as they have cheap units and can raise them out of control. They might well be my second army, though. Vampires are always cool!

Ditto, except I haven't started WFB and don't know anything about the rules! :P I have the second-to-latest rulebook from an eBay lot, but trying to read it made me want to sleep. It looks like it could be a fun game, but it's not something I'd ever want to start, given my lack of opponents from games I already play! :(
