It's been discussed as a possibility that my group may start playing WFB. Never having played (or seen) a game, I don't know what to expect, in terms of choosing the kind of army I'd like to field. I know it's vastly different from 40K (in terms of turn flow, etc), which makes choosing an army difficult.

Also, though money isn't an issue, time is...I'd like to shy away from horde armies because I don't exactly have an abundance of time to build/paint models. Right now we're only looking to start at maybe a 500 point force each, to see if we like it, so suggestions would be great.

As far as my playing style...those who remember my 40K days know that I have a particular soft spot for the Imperial Guard, and enjoyed fielding the forces of the Inquisition as well. Character, above all, is my primary concern when it comes to playing, not winning.

Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

Fantasy is much more strategic than (40k) tactical, you need to think where you need your units to be a couple of turns ahead. I'm just getting back into it after a year off.

If you want to stay away from a horde army then Wariors of Chaos is probably the way to go. Units of 5 Marauder horsemen as core, and then units of 5 Chaos Knights to top up. Plus the characters are quite expensive points wise. You could even get the troll king and have an army of trolls and big stuff!

Dark elves are also very popular, but you need fairly substantial block of infantry in the force too. I think Empire and Bretonians can do all mounted too (there is a theme here somewhere  ).

My best advice would be to chose the army that you like the look of best (unless it Daemons for auto win boring :( ), and then go from there. It is pretty possible to do small elite armies with most books (not skaven!), so it's pretty much preferance.

The same friend who brought this up also suggested Warriors of Chaos too. Having fielded Inquisition units in 40K, I'm somewhat resistant to falling to the charms of Chaos, lol...

...but it may be the just what I need. It's a shame that Witch Hunters are only in Mordheim.

Also, assuming that we do this, I may consider outsourcing the painting and assembly, because I'm not exactly the best painter, and I'd want to at least have a decent-looking army that will actually BE painted!

Simple is the way to go, and it'll look good.

1) Spray black
2) Pick some choice bits out in metal
3) Highlight a few areas in dark grey
4) Cover with Devlan Mud or Badab black
5) Paint any horsey bits you feel like

Try for neatness, rather than lots of detail, and the effect is great. Will try to post some pics in the near future of mine.

If you want 'good side' Cav then Brets are a good choice, I ve seen more than one army use Empire knights (somewhat easier to paint) as alternatives. Just hide the empire insignia and add some Sisters of Battle icons to their shields,(http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog/QUATERMASTERS_STORE_WITCH_HUNTERS_27.html) to pretty them up.

There are some buffable metallic paints out there, I'm getting my hands on some this weekend and I'll see how they go. Perfect for all that barding/armour.

Hope it goes well

Ironically enough, today I get wind that 40K is back in the cards, instead of WFB. Lol.

Now, if only I could convince them to give Dark Heresy a go, I wouldn't have to worry about painting a crap-ton of Guardsmen again. :-p

40k  Well, that's easy too. for 1500 you can do 2 squads of vets in chim, a coy hq in chim. 4 Russ choices and 3 sentinels. Weapons to fit the points, as I'm in the same boat as you you. Conversion and making is fine... I hate painting :-( . My Cowboy guard are in the gallery, somewhere (necromunda section if there is one).

Enjoy!

Hehe. I'm even worse at doing vehicles! I bought everything I had before on eBay, but I think this time around I'd want something a bit more uniform.

I may just go straight to the Inquisition again, depending on how things turn out. That way my models could double over for Dark Heresy...

Thanks for your help, nonetheless! :)
