I have played "Fallout 2" and was wondering if anyone out there has played the first game, "Fallout".

I was thinking of giving it a try. Is it worth chasing down a copy of it?

Thanks

Yes, it's worth chasing down. Storywise it's better than FO2, and it has less bugs in it. At the very least it's worth saying they're both superb, pity you're approaching them in the wrong order.

Fallout 1 + 2 are amongst the best RPGs ever created, I think Torment might be better, but all three are easily top 10 material.

I've heard there is a Fallout '3' - I am not sure of the actual title though. Has anyone played that game?

I have also heard about an on-live version of Fallout - MMO I think the name is. It is along the lines of a monthly subscription online type of deal.

As for the question at hand. I have played Fallout 1 several times and enjoyed it each time. I've only had a chance to play 2 once or twice. Since I bought them used neither had the manuals and I had a semi rough time getting the game play down with 2.... not so with 1.

It is a good game... enjoy it.

I am off to go look at "Torment" though...

Fallout is a great game, though you will probably miss having a car to carry around all your junk. It's also on a timer, which limits your ability to explore and see everything. It's possible that someone has made a patch (hack) to disable the time limit.

"Fallout 3" is probably "Fallout Tactics", which is fundamentally similar to the previous two, but has a much stronger emphasis on building up a combat-worthy team and doing combat missions. There is a lot less to see and explore, but a lot more combat.

i didnt like fallout 1 or 2. yes it has a great storyline, but its too aincient to be playable IMO, which is unfortunate.

Tactics on the otherhand is fantastic. its easily my favourite strategy game, it is great to play and its storyline is ok too.

Wow, you're certainly in the minority DM.

Fallout 1 + 2 still run in XP, sure the resolution is low, but that's to be expected (and people will be saying that about Half Life 2 in 5 - 10 years)

But the story, system, background, scripting and characters in Fallout 1 + 2 are top notch.

General opinion is that Fallout Tactics shouldn't even be considered 'cannon' as it deviates from established background a lot. Plus it's not a true Fallout game as it's squad based tactics rather than an RPG. It was ok, but boring compared to FO1 and 2.

I can't recommend it enough, it's wordy at around 1 million words of dialog. But that's whats so great about it, the story is strong. The characters are well developed, entertaining and have genuine depth to them. Plus it has some superb voice acting. It (along with Fallout 1 + 2 and Baldurs Gate 1 + 2) have well deserved places in the best games (and RPGs) of all time. (Btw, full name of the game is Planescape: Torment.)

The general warnings are 1. It's Fantasy, 2. It's very in depth and you may not properly complete (understand the full true story) it the first time round, as it's possible to miss things. 3. It uses the D&D System (Infinity Engine) - It does work Windowed. :D

Now if I could just get System Shock 2 to work on my PC.

oh dont get me wrong, it certainly is a great game, but its done very oldschool (i dont mean gfx or compatability which are fine) just the gameplay not all that good IMO.

great gameplay can save a bad storyline and background, but a terrific story/setting cant save bad gameplay.

Bad Gameplay? The Fallout RPG Series?

...

I don't think I want to discuss this game with you any further. Wow. There are no words.

I think I will have to find a copy of Fallout, the 1st game and I am also going to look into Torment.
Fen has peaked my interest on that one. Sounds like it might be worth playing.

Fallout 3 is a future release, After Interplay went bankrupt the game licence was bought by Betheda softworks, who did Morrowind and more recently Oblivion.

So who knows what's in store for the game.

If it turns out anything like Morrowind it would be awesome.

Fallout 3 = Fallout Tactics

There is a future release for Fallout... I heard it at one of the local game stores (you know - the ones that specialize in the console game industry) that it was going to be an on-line type of deal.

Nah i'm actually talking about Fallout 3.
If i was refering to Fallout tactics i'd have said so.

Bethesda softworks has yet to do an online multiplayer videogame, so i doubt Fallout 3 will break the mold.

Yea, knockoffs because they don't follow on the continuing storyline started in original game, which fallout 2 is also a continuation of.
