The first of three planned "micro-expansions" for Sins of a Solar Empire will be released on Tuesday. Entrenchment costs $10 to download and it adds new features related to that very neglected aspect of the game, static defenses.

Some of the features of Entrenchment include heavily-armed military starbases, new upgrades for each races' turrets, subspace inhibitors which can make enemy ships move more slowly, and minefields to channel the enemy and prevent them from simply going around all your cunning defenses.

One of the distinctive features of Sins has always been that it's impossible to turtle, but that may change with this expansion. I personally wouldn't mind a bit better static defenses. They certainly won't replace fleets, but they should allow you to be more daring with your fleets, knowing that your critical chokepoint systems can repel pirate raids and siege frigate rushes without a fleet constantly parked nearby.

Of course this begs the question... is anyone still playing Sins? From the time I installed Fallout 3 until just recently, I wasn't. Sins unfortunately devours huge blocks of time because there's no such thing as a short game and it requires fairly constant attention and management to survive. Still, it does have some ability to "play itself" when you are half paying attention and doing something else.

In any case, I think that I will be getting this micro-expansion since it will enhance a style of play that I enjoy (base-building / turtling) and hopefully make it a bit more forgiving of players who are not paying attention 100% of the time.
