I suspect that I will have to buy it as soon as it comes out. I like to turtle and it sounds like just what the Imperial Guard will be good at in Winter Assault. I believe we can expect future expansions and more races since the game appears to be doing well in stores and has a fairly steady on-line community.

City of Heroes and Dawn of War remain my two biggest time sinks after many months (consuming much more time than actual 40K). Dawn of War has proven to have great replay value and I have not played Starcraft (my previous old standby) at all since I got it.

I installed it way back when it came out, just to see if it worked under linux. It did, but my old pIII 800's graphics card couldn't render NPOT (non-power ov two) textures. Since then I have built a pure 'gaming' system; a beast - it is an old server, and the 4u rackmount chassis has heating issues. but inside are dual AMD 2.0ghz cpu, 1gb ram, 256mb geforce FX 5600, and it runs Vector Linux 5.1. Vector Linux is a stripped down OS designed to be fast on a 486 with 16 MB RAM, so I have almost no overhead or boot times.

There are so many games I have waiting to install it will be a while before dow. I just installed doom3 and dungeon siege. Next will be farcry and kotor2, then maybe dow or bf2.

And that is only the games... There are other 'fun' things I want to get set up on that box, such as 'Enlightenment' and 'Looking Glass' (next generation/3d desktop window managers), dvd authoring tools, and a host ov audio apps like freebirth.

It won't have much effect on people who only wanted to play the singe-player campaign, but for people who enjoy more head-to-head battle with Human opponents: Dawn of War has been extensively patched and rebalanced since it came out. Races and tactics are now more balanced, and there are a lot more maps.

If you fire up the game and select MULTIPLAYER > ONLINE it will automatically apply the patches. I recommend you do it at a time when you don't really need your PC, since it takes literally hours to download and apply them. (There are only four patches, but some are very big.)

Doubtful. One of the things the creators have said was that they were trying to design the game in a way that would make turtling a suicide tactic.

Take a look at the article Animus

That might have been their original philosophy, but they've realized that something was missing with their game, so they made the IG up to be the ultimate turtlers.

It should add an interesting dynamic to the mix
