Some games use just one sided dice for everything. I suppose that makes the game simpler in some ways. Of these systems, what do you guys prefer?

I've always heard good things about the old D6 Star Wars, but I've never played it much. GURPS uses just D6. On the other hand, I have had a lot of fun playing different games that swear by the D10 (and D%).

My favourite systems are SW-D6 (only D6, although you do need one to be different to all the rest) and Dream Pod 9's Silhouette system (again, only D6).

White Wolf's Storyteller system, using only D10s, is also fairly good - if you are into that type of game. I never really got into the swing of WW, so it's not on my high list.

I really enjoyed Shadowrun (all D6's), Gurps, and old Star Wars.

There was a fantasy system that used D8's, but darn it, I can't for the life of me remember what it was. (It might have been Earthdawn or one of those anthro-pomorphic games.)

Although, I will admit that rolling hordes of dice after a while can get quite monatenous.

Yuo just can't beat the D20 of the D&D game. It also utilises a lot of weirdly
shaped dice like the D4,D8,D10,D12 and the D%.

i dunno why i like this system so much? Maybe it's because it makes me sound
more powerful with the mighty battlecry,"Eat my natural 20 vile dragon" :D

Ul Zaorith, a system created by a friend of mine, is a purely D8 system. It also has the most unique stat system I've ever seen, and it's prone to the most amusing situations.

I disagree.
I believe that not only can you beat the D20 of Dungeons and Dragons, but that the D20 system fundamentaly sucks. The fact that it uses a stupid number of other stupid die also means it is about as far from a 'single dice system' as you can get.
Perhaps you like the system because you don't know any better.

I don't really like the idea of a one-die system, it really limits what you can do with the rules. It may force you into some really hokey mechanics, where the addition of a single other die type would aleviate the problem and make for a better game.
My own system uses only D12s (for most basic skill rolls), D6s and D3s (mainly for damage).

The problem with the d20 is exactly what its advantage is.

There is =NO= reliability of results. In other words, the random element is grossly over-exaggerated.

If your system WANTS grotesquely random results, d20 is for you... but sometimes strict 5% jumps are too harsh a mistress... The gentle bell curve, which most d6 systems are based on, is capable of delivering much more reliable results...

("Reliable results," "reliability" refer to the ability of highly skilled individuals to generally succeed at the task they are best, without the perception of arbitrary failures that can occur in any randomized event.)

So you have a +3 attack bonus. 1-20 +3, you are at the mercy of chance.

It would be okay if you had an actual statistic you were rolling against, like a ballistic skill of 15, which you are trying to roll equal to or under on a D20 in order to hit.

The Rifts system from Palladium is similar to the D20 system, as far as using a huge variety of dice goes. When rolling to attack, you roll a D20, and have to score higher than 5, I believe it is, in order to hit. If your score is higher than five, but below the Armor Rating of the armor worn by the target, then your attack hits the armor rather than the person. If the roll is above both, or the target isn't wearing armor, then the damage is resolved against the target. In my opinion, that gives a fairly concrete target number most of the time. Of course, a 1 is always a failure, regardless of any bonuses.

Erm... Where was I going with this again? :-o

I love Rifts too. :D

The GM makes or breaks the game.

Has anyone ever figured out what to do with a d30? I bought a few just for the fun of it but is there just ONE system out there that acknowledges its existence?

Also, d100s are bloody stupid.

So, is that all modified by contributing factors, like target speed, cover, concealment, etc?

I guess you could make a decent system using a D30. +50% more variety in possible results than a D20.
Or you could not.

The golf ball looking ones, or the 2D10 type? I'm no fan of either. Especially the golf ball.

The golfball one. Really so hard to determine which face is up on those.

The palladium armour system with the AR appeals to me. But I realize it doesn't take into account factors like concealment and stuff like that.

One thing I think it lacks is armour penetration. I regard the AR factor as coverage. However, way before armour falls apart I do expect the user to expire if they take a massive amount of damage. Now, if I remember correctly the AR rating does go down when the SDC is depleted... Could be wrong. So many things in the palladium fantasy rpg....

The company that marketed the d30 ("The Armoury"?) tried hard to sell them and even had to give them away with orders from their store. Eventually, they published a booklet of d30 tables so that people would have something to do with them.

Never heard of d100 before.
Probably would be hard to determine the up-facing side.
