So what are your tips for painting yellow (especially on power armor or vehicles, i.e. Imperial Fists)

I was watching a video where the painter mixed a bit of purple in with his yellow making a very nice and pleasant dark yellow/brown color.

I haven't tried this myself as I have a brownish yellow premixed color that I like. But mixing on the palette seems to run the risk of not maintaining a consistent color through out the project especially if you have to do touch ups or can't finish the whole coat that day and have to come back the next.

So what are your favorite tips?

Also, since it is yellow, do you prefer to primer in black, grey or white?

That's a tough one - one of the worst colors to paint imo.
The only thing I can recommend is white undercoat :D

I'd have another tip, but You need some old range paints

Works almost even with black or white undercoats

For my Goliaths I used iyaden darksun, had my lightings; mostly with a mix of white and iyaden, or directly with white; thenapplied the old yellow ink.

Aaaah, agreed:
white highlights followed by yellow ink is well tested and checked idea!
I used it here on the Bad Moon:

I've had the best of luck with priming white and then washing with several coats of the yellow of my choice.

another method I have played with over a black primer is to lay down either an orange or a medium brown and then blend up to the shade of yellow you want to use. I know my brother likes to use a flat gray over black primer to use yellow as well.

When I started painting again last week, I picked an Ultramarine style colour scheme for my Van Saars. The two methods I've used for painting yellow are Golden Yellow (or whatever the current equivalent is) over a Fiery Orange basecoat, or Orange wash over a Golden yellow basecoat.

I don't use undercoat anymore, I'd rather just give the miniature 2 coats of the base colour. When I did use to, I found trying to paint yellow over black was a nightmare, always looked greenish.

I have just bought a yellow spray undercoat from http://www.thearmypainter.com I'm going to do a lizardman army with it, the can was a bit pricet €11.99, but I reckon it will save me about 15 hours of applying yellow after undercoating them white. If it does then its money well spent. :D

Don't know why the url tag isn't working either. :(
