CONTENT UPDATE!!! Between illness and the holidays and inevitable mandatory overtime, I finally managed to squeeze in some time this weekend to work on the ziggurat.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7146/6617418961_aaf24716f8.jpg" width="500" height="282">

I only painted threw paint on half of the terrain to see how it would look...and, honestly, not too thrilled. I did wind up purchasing a darker shade (but it's still drying, so no updated photos yet) that does look a bit better, but now I'm wondering if it'll be dark enough. Below is a reference of what I would like the end result to look similar to...while I know it is made by professionals and this is my first piece, I'm still a bit disheartened at how it's turning out at the moment.

<img src="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1440045_paintedb.jpg">

I'm debating on whether I want to add static grass to my piece or not, as I'm not sure on whether this'll be an "overgrown by wilderness" ziggurat or "located on a barren, dead world" ziggurat.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7169/6617420481_ecf95e19b8.jpg" width="500" height="282">

The sides were getting a bit rough to coat, but I think if I throw more paint on them, it should help. Really my goal is more to cover up the green polystyrene, not necessarily cover up the dark, dark gray undercoat. Hopefully when I'm done with the basecoat of the new gray paint some black ink will help highlight the cracks and crevices again.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7024/6617422155_0978a85739.jpg" width="500" height="282">

Some of the weather detail that I put into it by chipping foam out with a knife. That glimmer of green is representative of my frustration, as it hasn't been the easiest stuff to get rid of. Hopefully the details will look good in the end, but we'll see.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7004/6617423785_afe0587b28.jpg" width="500" height="282">

More green! Ugh! I haven't been this irritated by seeing green since my old gaming group's Ork player smashed into my lines of Guardsmen, lol.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7002/6617425179_87dc900be1.jpg" width="500" height="282">

Another distance angle, hopefully the weathering you can see in the piece now will be good looking by the time I'm done with it.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7149/6617426641_da24be046c.jpg" width="500" height="282">

This is what the paint SHOULD have looked like (as shown on a paper towel). I'm not sure if they gray undercoat is what is making it look so...white...or if it's the green polystyrene. Thankfully the new paint is at least somewhat darker (but not too dark, hopefully, since I want it to look as close to the GW piece as possible).

To keep my mind off of what might shape into a disaster, I've thought about what I'm missing from the final product: details. As I'm trying to avoid completely copying the GW piece, I'm shying away from dropping $30 or so on the Arcane Ruins set (sadly not any cheaper on eBay) and have tried to find something along the ancient look to complement the piece. I'm still planning on putting the black glass tiles on the top tier to give it a sort of eerie, this-tier-is-probably-important look, but I don't want to leave the rest so...bare...

Oddly enough I stumbled across <a href="http://easternfringe.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5153" target="_blank">my own thread regarding cake pillars from over 4 years ago</a>, which has me considering on dropping my notions of finding plaster pillars (as they only seem to be available online in UK stores, never could find them locally) and instead grabbing some plastic ones to just saw into pieces.

Anyone have any other ideas for ruined stuff that could work on this piece? The cheaper the better (I'm a huge fan of recycling free "junk" into terrain)! I've been watching bitz/bits auctions on eBay for little details, but I'm not terribly familiar with the WFB line to know where to focus my efforts on.

UPDATE! I'll be perfectly honest though, I'm much more likely to update when I either get feedback or answers to the multitude of questions I've had. I know I'm not making Necromunda-style terrain right now but *surely* with 600+ views *someone* has answers...

Anyway, here's what I have on the ziggurat as of right now. I'm going to try doing a bit more today, but there's a limit to what I can do at the moment (I need flock to make lichen and electrostatic grass to make the obvious, but I'm out of hobby funds for the moment):

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7149/6680571131_6e5f14836f.jpg" width="500" height="282">

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7021/6680570037_e193dc7443.jpg" width="500" height="282">

There's still some green coming through, but less so now; it can pass for exotic material at this point, but I'm considering adding more paint.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7008/6680568905_a986d0eaa9.jpg" width="500" height="282">

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7155/6680567773_5a89c986e2.jpg" width="500" height="282">

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7146/6680566741_a06710a349.jpg" width="500" height="282">

I'm hoping a combo of light cuts with the xacto blade and black ink will clear this up.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7030/6680565545_8b056e9fb7.jpg" width="500" height="282">

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7031/6680564329_72a84bc2c1.jpg" width="500" height="282">

I'm considering adding the black glass to the top portion today, if it looks like it's otherwise done. Even if I paint more of the other tiers or add the floral touches mentioned, the top tier should hopefully be done soon.

I also cut about 8 1'x1' MDF boards today so I can start working on other pieces...

With the green primarily residing in the cracks, it could easily be mistaken for moss....

On the whole, it looks really cool! Don't give up!

Thanks AZ!

All I wound up doing the other day was gluing on the black glass tiles, not really much of an improvement for a photographic update for now. In a few weeks I'll have my non-mortgage paycheck so I can buy more toys (in the form of sand, flock, ballast, static grass, etc); probably won't have any updates of note until then (especially since I'm insane and am considering working on my off days for massive OT $$$, so I won't have time to paint).

I'm considering starting on another piece, but I'm not sure on what. I would *love* to try my hand at some of the stuff that can be found on <a href="http://ironhands.com/necro.htm">Necromundicon</a>, but lack of funds will prevent me from buying any of the needed GW terrain parts. I do have a bunch of random odds and ends and castoffs that I could cobble together into something, though, so I may wind up making some wrecked urban piece, we'll see...

Rather than repeat my "painter's block" woes from the Painting thread I have, just click on the link in my signature and read up over there.

Back? Okay, good. Because the terrain thread I have will be more interesting.

The same resource problem has hit me here too, but only in so much as I can't finish the ziggurat until I grab some sand, rocks, flock, and static grass. So when I get those materials, I'll finish it up and post results.

I promised I had better news for here and I do. I finally got a firm commitment from another player who has finally hopped on the Ork side of "do I want to play Orks or Chaos Marines?" fence, so I'm going to get to work building a couple of Orky buildings. I'm going to take some photos of them as much WIP as I can, including the supplies I'm going to use (some are rather unique and might not be easily replicated but they might be easily substituted).

Also, seeing as this still is a forum more interested in Necromunda than anything else, you'll like this next bit. Since my old group *easily* made use of Necro terrain in 40K games, I see no reason why I can't make terrain inspired by Necromunda...specifically, the Territory Table. I'd always hoped for a Necro campaign in which a map could be drawn, and territories would be randomly rolled as players explored the map; in turn, that's the type of terrain that would be fought on, to give it more of a theme instead of just random generation. For example, in a campaign turn that an opponent of mine would attack, say, my workshop, the battle would be centered around defending an actual terrain piece OF a workshop, rather than an assortment of Necromunda buildings (though they'd certainly be there).

As I'm on a tight budget for hobby money I'm going to have to rely more on cheaper materials (i.e. cardboard) than others I would prefer to use (GW buildings, plasticard sheets, etc), but I think it'll be do-able.

Here's the proposed list; even though I don't have clear ideas in mind for all of these, I'll work it out later (feel free to make suggestions though!):

-Chem Pit (should be easy enough)
-Old Ruins (way easy)
-Slag (I've seen an assortment of ideas floating around for these)
-Mineral Outcrop (see Slag)
-Settlement (might be a bigger project)
-Mine Workings (take a hill, add a shaft entrance, done)
-Tunnels (TP/PT tubes!)
-Vents (TP/PT tubes with grates!)
-Holestead (could be a smaller piece that could also double in the Settlement)
-Water Still (see Slag)
-Drinking Hole (a bit more involved project)
-Guilder Contact (hmmm...)
-Friendly Doc (while a backalley would be amusing, a small shop that might double into the Settlement is more likely)
-Workshop (see Holestead)
-Gambling Den (see Drinking Hole; could be the same building...)
-Spore Cave (see Mine Workings, could be the same piece...)
-Archaeotech (not sure, maybe a small area with spare weapons bitz/bits lying around?)
-Green Hivers (ha! Seeing as how this lets you choose the the territory you want, no need to model this one...)

We shall see what the future brings! Maybe I'll win the lottery and make it all happen! :wink:

(Should I roll on the Territory Table to see what I do first? If only it were that simple!)

Sounds good. I like the idea of multi-use pieces, ie Mineral outcrop/slag. gamble/drinking den.

I would totally roll on the table to see what to make first!

You've inspired me to follow the territory table with my terrain too. Time... I need more hobby time...

Don't we all? Lol. I think instead of time I need to rope players into contributing terrain; while I contemplated a sort of "club dues" thing maybe terrain donation would be preferable?

Well, I think I'm going to cheat first, since the idea I have in mind first will probably be the one I go with; I'll elaborate in a bit.

For everyone else...CONTENT UPDATE!

This'll be a two-parter, the first installment will showcase some of the odds and ends I'll be working with (I think you guys know what cardboard looks like, so I'll spare you that). The only thing I haven't photographed are old pill bottles, chopsticks, and bamboo skewers, but I think you get the idea on what they look like anyway.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7030/6809968807_db9b3a7a0d.jpg" width="500" height="282">

My more recently scrounged/acquired scraps. The majority of the plastic pieces you see actually came from a military Mega Blocks set, sprues for the various pieces they had packed in there.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7147/6809969609_564a6817d1.jpg" width="500" height="282">

My favorite acquisition of late; dials from broken office chairs. Aside from the obvious use as gears/cogs, I'm thinking that they would be great for Adeptus Mechanicus symbols.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7149/6809970415_2fe220a349.jpg" width="500" height="282">

One of the Mega Blocks sprues up close. Mr. Nougat, I see my first future Necro terrain piece here: Vents or Tunnels, as this reminds me of a large sewer entrance that's been obviously damaged.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7175/6809971263_86de9fecb0.jpg" width="500" height="282">

Chances are, you might have these, or know someone who does. These are the things that Glade scented oils come in, and I managed to nab three of them from a recent dinner visit to my parents' house. I see power generators for something in their future...

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7004/6809972141_a934a8a290.jpg" width="500" height="282">

Bitz recently re-acquired from my brother (the Ork player) that I gave him years ago and he did nothing with. The tube at the top has a bunch of fantasy shields in there, but more importantly some of them are Orky in nature, and can be re-purposed as detailing...

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7147/6809972961_2b22310345.jpg" width="500" height="282">

I really wish that hatch was larger.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7035/6809973801_62f878cc0a.jpg" width="500" height="282">

Depending on your age you may recognize these as pieces from the old board game <a href="http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3086/the-omega-virus">The Omega Virus</a>. The game is LOOOONG gone but somehow I still had 3/4 pieces used as entrance bays for your commando piece (only 2 pictured because I don't think crowding all three into a photo would do any good, lol).

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7026/6809974573_4544dacd7a.jpg" width="500" height="282">

They almost remind me of the Aegis Defense Line things GW produces. In any case, I think they'll be a decent trio to use in the future.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7166/6809975499_6b4a795b8d.jpg" width="500" height="282">

Not entirely sure what this stuff is, but my girlfriend handed me a whole box of scraps of this after she finished re-lining the drawers of an inherited hutch. It has an odd rubbery feel but I hope that applying paint to it will toughen it up.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7031/6809976259_355b156a6f.jpg" width="282" height="500">

And, lastly...an empty, washed parmesan cheese container. Only reason why I show it at all (because we all know to use old bean cans for fuel dumps...) is that it's longer than a can and is plastic. We go through enough of this stuff that I think I'll prefer it to bean cans, but the odd can will still get used.

Part 2 to drop shortly!

Part 2: The Orky Fort!

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7017/6809977105_029b990420.jpg" width="500" height="282">

The walls, unglued and boring.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7164/6809977955_17146fb49d.jpg" width="500" height="282">

The entrance is wide enough to fit two models, in the case of ingress/egress from the structure. The unpainted Catachan model (in both senses of the term) has been replaced with a painted HB Servitor that I received from eBay, as it has more weight and will be better for stress tests...maybe it's the Catachan re-purposed?

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7160/6809978797_6ee43933ec.jpg" width="500" height="282">

This old gun is going to be incorporated SOMEHOW...

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7024/6809979473_d262b1fd69.jpg" width="500" height="282">

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7010/6809980291_83b0d9617f.jpg" width="500" height="282">

Bunker! The back is open so I would need to close it off, and I'm not sure that this will even fit well enough on the piece (nothing has been glued on as of yet, except the walls and roof have been attached). But keeping in mind with Planetstrike scenarios and rules, the idea behind this would be that a lone Ork or lousy Grot has been left in here to operate the gun; the bunker will be full of ammo and supplies so no other models can be in here to fire out or anything.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7161/6809981229_66a31fcbfd.jpg" width="500" height="282">

I was tired of the camera issue from the gun being too glossy (it was painted before I ever received it), so I went ahead and splashed some red on there so it would show up better and, hopefully, shoot faster!

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7025/6809981987_1e2aa21e4c.jpg" width="500" height="282">

The base, assembled piece. I didn't wipe away any excess glue, as I plan to paint over it like it's all a crappy weld line from a Mek. There are some gaps on the corners that need to be filled, but a mixture of foam and other materials will not only solved that issue but will make the piece look haphazard/Orky.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7029/6809982833_33f0460dfe.jpg" width="500" height="282">

The rough cut of the entrance.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7148/6809983785_dc191bf45e.jpg" width="500" height="282">

Ah, that's better!

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7148/6809984699_de4bfe361d.jpg" width="500" height="282">

I broke a salt shaker a while back, but kept the lid. I think it'll make a decent roof hatch.

And now, for the stress and scale test:

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7161/6809985665_298f10a4e6.jpg" width="500" height="282">

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7172/6809986499_4d0b0ce593.jpg" width="500" height="282">

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7026/6809987191_8dfa046d1a.jpg" width="500" height="282">

While quite un-Orky to use Marine boyz for the job, they'll have to do! 20 tactical marines (10 of which have nickels glued underneath for balance), 1 metal techmarine, and 4 metal servitors later...it held up. I even lifted a finger to promptly push down on the piece, and the glue held. So for now, no support columns to reinforce the roof!

I will probably cut some jagged chunks on the higher walls to give it more of an Orky look, plus then the models can actually SEE over them. Also more detail bitz will get thrown on here, including some corrugated cardboard (obligatory for any Ork piece). Once that's all done I'll figure out how to do rivets for this particular piece...

Enjoy the content updates, probably won't be any more until I start vacation in a little over a week (though, of course, I'll still be here daily)!

i dont supose you have ever heard of some thing called the 'skaters eye'? when i see a ledge or some steps i dont see just a wall or an anoying elevation, i see a spot, something to shred if not only in my imagination. you however have the modelers eye! man you horde some crap lol. i see junk yet you see a bunker with a generator and look out tower lol.

ive been going over ebay lately as im getting tired of my urban table and ive decided to backtrack some what and go for the grassy/hilly/forest look. i found some wicked bargains though and i have the whole setup ordered for £140 or about $200 in american credits. plus its all pre-built, all i have to do is make the bases i got for the trees green and magnitse the trees for storage. may sound like a lot but the time its going to save me is massive! plus i checked how much it would be if i got unbuilt stuff from GW (and if you ask me thier stuff isnt half as good) and it was about £250 in total. ill show it off when its all here but as the postage is free on the hills they will take upto 25 days to get here.
this is the most exspensive item:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wargame-Terra ... 2318474142
but thats a great center piece for the table and we play lots of fantasy too so we can have all kinds of rules for that item.
sorry i derailed your thread with tales of skating and ebay lol

Better that a thread derails rather than a train, lol.

Thankfully I didn't lose my eye for re-using junk from before; the wider world outside the Fringe has a plethora of great ideas, embraced fully by myself since I'm not rolling in cash!

I may eventually get tired of urban/ruins type of terrain and make up some wilderness terrain, but that'll be a long way off, primarily as I don't have a hot wire cutter that would be perfect for cutting foam. Since I have a reliable supplier not that far away from me, I don't mind creating most of my stuff out of foam and cardboard until I can afford to buy someone else's stuff (like GW) or craft stuff out of plasticard.

In any case, if I spot something cheap on good ol' eBay, I'll at least keep an eye on it, if not outright drop a bid on it!

I feel the same way, but until GW stops raising their prices, I will consult the magic of eBay first. I want to be able to afford this hobby AND my bills, not one or the other. Sometimes I get on there even when I don't have spare cash just to kind of see what the market's like; right now it's so flooded with Necrons and Grey Knights that it's sickening.

I've always loved buying things off of eBay when it's clear that the seller has no idea what they have, usually get stuff for super cheap!

Anyway, here's another nice piece of "junk" that will eventually get repurposed:

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7042/6856677537_7c78da84b7.jpg" width="500" height="282">

Smaller coffee cans are good too, but I like this massive one, it'll make a great piece for a refinery or something (especially with the PVC pipe I have leftover from a home repair project).

Now that I'm on vacation, I plan on getting the ziggurat finished up here really soon (next few days are booked with family and friends though). I made a trip to a hobby shop specializing in trains and grabbed a bunch of ballast, sand, flock, burnt static grass, "leaves", and lichen...the ziggurat is going to look nice and ruined, with the exception of the mysterious top layer. I'll also need to cut out some stairs and maybe even a couple of ruined columns...I'm considering embedding magnets in the stairs and columns so that they join easily to (but are removable from) the main piece.

I'm also going to put some more touches on the Ork Fort, I went ahead and glued everything down from the last set of photos, now I just need to cut some more details out of the walls and add some more details on the exterior and it should be ready for painting!

Also, here's a sneak peek at my next project:

Rough cut of some hills. Bought the AoBR box set to introduce my brother into the game, hopefully I'll have great tales of his WAAAAAAAGH!s in the future. But not all of those pieces will wind up being hills; some of them will turn into <b>Slag</b> deposits, and with some chopsticks cut to look like a mine entrance, I think I might just create a <b>Mine Workings</b> as well.
