Both armies had the mission: Engage and Destroy

Image

And here the Battlefield:

Image
Image
This time the battle was fought with my modular battlefield and my personal terrain.

The Repentia would enter the Battlefield delayed, while the Plaguemarines led by the Sorceror Champion would make a Flank March.

We used the following chart to determine the number of turns:
1: 3 turns
2-3: 4 turns
5-4: 5 turns
6: 6 turns

The game would last for 6 turns. The Forces of Chaos would of course have to deploy first, followed by the Sisters of Battle. The Sisters won the roll for the first turn, though.

Deployment saw most the units of Chaos mobilizing on the left flank of their deployment zone. Hephaiston and the Aspiring Champion of Nurgle would take the Rhino together with the 4 Plaguemarine Squad. The Rhino would begin on Slow Speed behind a small rocky hill. The regular Chaos Space Marines took cover behind a wall leaving the Lascannon the only viable Weapon to fire but also to be fired upon.

Image

With the Great Unclean One yet to be summoned, the Sorceror Champion and his squad being on a Flank March and the Veterans infiltrating taking the crater in the middle of the board to the left, the Forces of Chaos did not deploy much for the first turn.

Image

Reacting to the imminent threat on their right Flank the Sisters of Battle deployed in number behind the scarce cover there. The Canoness and her Bodyguard would stay close to support them. The Seraphim being the most mobile unit of the loyalists took a position on the left, while the Confessor led his Militia at the centre of the field. The Thuddgun would also support the Sisters of Battle Squads on the right.

I'm sorry some of the pics are not my usual quality. I hope you enjoy nevertheless.

Turn 1:

SoB:

The delayed Repentia entered the battlefield on the far right flank to secure their sisters against the inevitable onslaught of the Nurgle Sorceror and his squad of Plaguemarines. If they dared to attack from that side, they would not find it unguarded.

Image
The Repentia spread out in an open formation to cover up most firing angles.

The left Sisters squad advanced into the cover of the ruined walls in front of them, while the Canoness and her Bodyguard kept closely behind. The Seraphim jumped out of their cover behind the rocky plateu in the middle of the battlefield while the Militia followed on their heels. With the imminent threat of the Chaos Veterans right in front, the Thuddgun and the righthand Sisters Squad remained stationary.

Image
The Seraphim advance to the middle of the board.

Image
Followed shortly by the Militia, who were more than eager to get to grips with the heretics.

The Thuddgun declared indirect fire against the Veteran Chaos Marines in the crater, but the first shot taken in the game would go to the followers of Chaos, as the Veteran Squad being on overwatch unleashed their wrath upon the poor Servitor and his piece of artillery. Moments later the Servitor looked at the molten metal heap that once was his proud cannon.
The Chaos Veterans would not enjoy their little success for long as the Multimelter of the Sisters Squad let the whole squad vanish in a cloud of red vapour.

Image
Avenging the destruction of the Thuddgun, the Sisters bring their heavy weapon to bear upon the minions of Chaos.

Sorry for the very long delay! I try to manage the updates quicker this time...

Chaos Turn 1:

Since most of the followers of the ruinous powers were not yet present on the battlefield, their first turn would be a short one. Nevertheless it would decide where the battle was to be fought.

The Chaos Rhino shifted gear and moved forward behind the relative safety of an old communications bunker and foremost outside the line of sight of the Sister’s heavy, but shortranged weaponry.
Only the Lascannon of the Chaosmarine Squad opened fire, but missed.
With still no psyker on the board the psi-phase ended with its beginning.

SoB Turn 2:

Not knowing the freight of the Rhino but guessing that there would have to be a Chaos General and his Plaguemarines, the Sisters tried to establish a defensive line of fire.
The Repentia improved their position and fanned out even more, so the minions of the dark gods could not hope to avoid their Eviscerators.
The Sister Squad with the Heavy Bolter and the Meltagun left their cover behind the ruined walls and took aim not only for the Plaguemarines, but also for the Rhino if it would dare to show as much as a single piece of its hull.
They were supported by the Canoness and her Bodyguard of Seraphim Sisters, who also advanced towards the imminent thread from the right flank.
Way behind them the Confessor redirected the Frateris Militia with flaming words of faith. Although they were not warriors in the direct sense of the word, they were still eager to come to grips with their sworn enemies.
The Seraphim jumped into close range of the Chaosmarine Squad and let fly with their Boltpistols. The ancient suits of Powerarmour were engulfed in a hail of Bolts, but after the barrage only the Chaosmarine with the Lascannon fell to the ground, pierced by a dozen shells.
The last to move was the Servitor, who took a position in front of the Repentia.

The Sisters fan out to greet their enemies with a hail of fire.

Chaos Turn 2:

The Chaos Sorceror with his bodyguard of Plaguemarines tried to finish their flanking movement on the Sisters far right flank, which was only covered by the Repentia.
The Chaos Rhino hit the brakes and began the Chaos cannonade with a salvo from its synchronized Bolters piercing the poor Servitor and ending its half-human half-machine existence.
Now the Chaos General “Hephaiston” deemed the moment right to make an appearance in all his dark glory and left the apc along his personal Squad of Plaguemarines and took a covered position at the sides of the radar bunker.
At last the Sorceror and his Plaguemarines appeared at the outer right flank of the battlefield. Without hesitation their weapons spewed forth their unholy wrath on the Repentia, thus letting seven Sisters fulfill their oath of repentance.
The rearguard of the Chaos forces, the Squad of Chaosmarines turned to face the threat of the Seraphim, who now stood in the open without any cover. Now Bolt was exchanged for Bolt and although sporting a Heavy Bolter the Chaos followers were merely as successful as the attack of the Seraphim had been, sending one of the angelic warriors to her grave.
The psi phase saw not much action from the Chaos Sorceror, but the loss on the side of the defenders of mankind was enough to create a fracture in the tissue of reality. Through the gap, with unearthly laughter, pushed the hulking form of a Great Unclean One next to the gas tanks and right in front of the Repentia.

SoB Turn 3:

Stopped in their tracks just for a splitsecond by the appearance of a greater daemon, the faces of the Repentia changed from a grim expression to a smile. Now they certainly would know repentance! With a cry of faith on their lips they charged the monstrosity and the Sorceror and his foul squad of Plaguemarines.
On the other side of the battlefield the Seraphim jumped right over the heads of the Chaos Marines, turned and threw a load of Plasmagrenades into the group of their foes killing instantly the Chaos Marine with the Heavy Bolter. The loss of their heavy weaponry proofed too much for the nerves of the Chaos Marines. Cursing their dark gods they ran for their lives.
The rest of the Sisters went on overwatch lest the Chaos General and his squad dare their luck by coming into the open.
In order to bring the Multimelta to bear upon the Great Unclean One, should he hack through the Repentia, the Sister Squad retreated from the cover behind the barrels to form another line of defence.
The Frateris Militia pushed on and would soon be able to enter the fray.
The Repentia hacked and slashed with their Eviscerators, cutting through Powerarmour, unnatural tough flesh and bone alike. The Sorceror watched his squad of Plaguemarines go down by the wrath of the half naked women and such was his surprise that he himself was hit by a several blows, one piercing his armour. The other strikes were deflected by his Conversion Field. Had this half of the Repentia earned much glory and found a target for their Eviscerators the unholy immaterial flesh of the Great Unclean One proofed virtually impenetrable for their blades. Two Repentia fell under the slimy sword of the greater daemon who constantly laughed as if existence itself was joke to him.
Even worse the Great Unclean One began to gibber some daemonic incantation and cast Plaguewind on the Sisters Squad with the Multimelta. Three Sisters sank to the ground as their flesh melted from their bones mutating organic and inorganic matter alike. Their squadmates looked in terror as from the molten heap rose a Plaguebearer ready to bring them death and disease. Instantly he turned on the Sister with the Multimelta, the one weapon that could have been a real threat to his greater counterpart only a few strides behind.
The Sorceror saw now the chance to get rid of one more Repentia and vomited a stream of corruption killing the Sister.

The Repentia bring down the Plaguemarines. At the same time their squadmates have to fight the Great Unclean One.

The Plaguewind not only kills three Sisters, it raises a Plaguebearer locking up the Multimelta!

Chaos Turn 3:

Almost all of the Plasma Clouds between the Chaos Marine Squad and the Seraphim disappeared. The Chaos Marines still not in cover searched for shelter in the ruined walls.
Chaos General Hephaiston ordered his Plaguemarines to take up a fortified position on the roof of the radar bunker and around it. Bolts and gouts of Plasma were exchanged between the followers of Nurgle and the followers of the Emperor of mankind. This time the gods would favour the Chaos Marines, bringing down three Seraphim Bodyguards while loosing just a single squadmate.
The Great Unclean One giggled and shoved the Repentia out of the way. Those puny she-maggots had reached their limit of amusing him and weren’t a threat either to be concerned about.
The lone Chaos Sorceror on the other side was still locked in a deadly melee battle with three maddened females, who succeeded in lopping of the head of the daemon summoner, while covering the body with two of their own dead. Not enough the flashes from the Conversion Field blinded the victorious Repentia. She would have to wander blindly around the battlefield with her last image being that of her Eviscerator cleaving through an archenemy of mankind.
The Plaguebearer slashed at the Sisters Squad to bring down the Multimelta once and for all, but the daemon proofed too slow and clumsy for the Sisters, who hit several times. The dark gods looked benevolent on their creature and the daemonic aura deflected each and every single strike.
But the worst for the Sisters was yet to come. The Great Unclean One created a great Plaguewind and with Total Power threw it upon the Canoness, who was engulfed in a vortex of foul fumes and acidic clouds, mutilating and transforming her into one of Nurgle’s servants, and in horror the Standardbearer and the last remaining Seraphim Bodyguard saw a new Plaguebearer rising from where their mistress had fallen. Even with their General down, the Sisters kept their nerves to repel the Chaos abominations.
The last thing in this turn to happen was the rallying call of the Chaos Space Marine Squad.

The GUO leaves the Repentia behind.

Image
The Plaguewind brings the Canoness down and turns her into a Plaguebearer.

(This was probably the point where the battle turned in favour of the Chaos forces, especially as I simply forgot I had drawn “look out sir, Aaargh!”, which would have saved my army commander by sacrificing her last bodyguard and denying my opponent important three victory points. Can anyone guess how this frustrates me still?)

SoB Turn 4:

The last Plasmaclouds on the field dissolved without further harm. The blinded Repentia staggered around a few steps trying to orientate by hearing over the din of shouts, Bolterfire and explosions.
With a hoarse battlecry the Repentia charged the Great Unclean One a second time.
The Seraphim jumped into close range of the remains of the Chaos Space Marines Squad and brought another one down with their Bolt Pistols. This time the Marines stood their ground despite the loss.
The Sister Superior led her last free Sister into a charge against the Plaguebearer threatening the two other Sisters of her squad. Maybe they could bring the daemon down by sheer force of numbers. But it should not come to be and the melee fighting resulted in a stalemate.
Both the Sisters Squad with the Heavy Bolter and the Frateris Militia retreated from the presence of the greater daemon of Nurgle to the very crater in which lay the smoking remains of the Chaos Space Marine Veterans, although the heat had not left much of them. Here they also would be provided with hard cover from the shells of the Plaguemarines lead by the Chaos General. Most shots were quite ineffective and smashed merely inches away from a proper target into the concrete of the radar bunker, but one found its mark and ended the Plaguemarine that held the Plasmagun.
One Repentia fell and the other saw her Eviscerator doing nothing to the disgusting hide of the Great Unclean One.
The Greater Daemon in turn cast a Miasma of Pestilence on himself bringing down the second Repentia who threw up her own innards.

Chaos Turn 4:

Laughing manically the Great Unclean One charged into the combat with the Sisters Squad and the Plaguebearer.
The Aspiring Champion and the last of the Chaos Space Marine Squad turned to face the Seraphim and gave them their answer in Bolts! Two Seraphim fell to their hail of exploding bullets.
The Chaos Rhino fired his Twin Linked Bolters on the blind Repentia. The Shell punched through her body but failed to stop the faithful woman in her tracks. Probably she would die of bloodloss anyway as the bolt had opened her chest.
Hephaiston and his Plaguemarines opened fire again on the second Sisters Squad but the cover of the crater prevented any harm to the true believers of the God-Emperor.
In bitter hand-to-hand fighting the foul daemons of Nurgle bested the Sisters but one: The Sister with the Flamer remained victorious over the Plaguebearer but could not wound the daemon.
The Great Unclean One summoned the raw power of the warp to destroy her, but due to some miraculous intervention his power was banished before it could take effect.

SoB Turn 5:

With shouts of “For the Emperor!” the Confessor with his Frateris Militia stormed forward aiming for a small breach in the fence next to the radar bunker in order to charge the Plaguemarines from there next turn.
The Sisters behind them took up tactical positions inside the crater and only one single Sister could not reach the safety of the rocky hollow. Their weapons brought another death among the Plaguemarines, although at the cost of the Heavy Bolter jamming.
The Last of the Seraphim Bodyguards fell under the Plaguesword of the Plaguebearer and even the Standardbearer was wounded but not infected.
The Sister with the Flamer was more lucky and shot the Plaguebearer opposing her at point blank range through his one eye in the head. She retreated further from the towering menace that was the Great Unclean One knowing she would not evade her imminent doom.
The Seraphim shot their Boltpistols at the two remaining Chaos Space Marines until the barrels started to take on a red glow, but again only one fell to the ground.
The warp was veiled this time even to the greater daemon of Nurgle.

Chaos Turn 5:

The Great Unclean one merely walked away from the staring Sister with the Flamer. Just to turn around after a few steps and vomiting a Stream of Corruption unto the poor Sister who screamed while being burned by the acidic fluids.
The Chaos Rhino fired again on the still blind Repentia bringing her finally down anmd ending her misery.
On the side from where the Chaos forces had entered the Battlefield in the first place the Aspiring Champion took grim revenge and the lives of the last two Seraphim.
The Chaos General climbed the ladder to the roof of the radar bunker to take up the position of one of his fallen. Then the Plaguemarines poured their salvos into the Frateris Militia killing four of the men of the administratum. The Frateris kept cool inspired by the flaming words of their Confessor. The Aspiring Champion of the Plaguemarines looked at his MK 1 Plasmapistol, which was gouting through one of the coils. Angrily he smote the weapon on the radar bunkers wall.
This turn the warp was more willing to be formed by the hands of the Great Unclean One, who wrapped himself in an Aura of Decay.

Image
The Confessor and his Frateris Militia lunge forward just to find themselves in a deadly killzone!

The Great Unclean One ends the life of the Flamer Sister, just as she began to think she would survive.

SoB Turn 6:

The Frateris stalled their advance and instead took aim for the Plaguemarines. They were supported by the Sisters Squad in the crater, who had again tactically shifted positions to make the most of their remaining weaponry. Therefore two of them turned and aimed for the Aspiring Champion who had brought down singlehandedly the two last Seraphim. When the smoke did clear the Aspiring Champion of the Chaos Space Marine Squad lay dead as did the last Plaguemarine.
The melee fight between the Standardbearer and the Plaguebearer again saw no victor emerging.
The tides of the warp seemed to have finally ebbed off and left the greater daemon of Nurgle to rely on his still unearthly powers without further aid of the immaterium.

Chaos Turn 6:

Being cut off the warp by the ebbing tide, the Great Unclean One knew he would have to be quick before he himself would be drawn back into the realm of Chaos. So he charged the Standardbearer and was just able to reach her. In the ensuing combat the two daemons cut the sister to ribbons.
Now Hephaiston threw every little bit he still had up his sleeve at the Sisters in the crater, he and the Aspiring Champion of Nurgle firing their Boltpistols twice and the Rhino firing his Twinlinked Bolters. That was all the Chaos General had left. Not a single round hit its mark, but it was clear the defenders of mankind would in no way advance one more time. Hephaiston wondered if he could call this a victory. At least he had not been as much as scratched by the pesky human defenders, but at what cost?

Image
The second row of Sisters turns backwards and shoots the Aspiring Champion of the Chaos Marines, while Hephaiston and his last follower pour bolts into the rim of the crater.

Conclusions:

This game was long, admittedly way too long. Unfortunately me and my opponent play not often enough by far to be firm, when it comes to special rules and/or special situations. With six turns we were both worn out in Turn 5! We were so tired we had to look up every rule we otherwise know instantly.
I have to admit I made a massive loads of mistakes leading to throwing Plasmagrenades with regular Sisters and hence having to replay the first shooting phase. Forgetting my strategy card and thus dooming my Canoness probably was the worst.
After the Battle we decided not count up the victory points in detail as it was clear I would be writing up this battlereport.
My Chaos Player was very clever to bring together his troops according to the Flanking Move. He was also as brave as lucky in transporting his General and a unit of Plaguemarines in his Rhino. The Great Unclean One proofed invulnerable to the Sisters who wielded only a handful of Melta weapons that at least would have had a chance of wounding the daemon. Who wants to get voluntarily into 12” of a GUO? That’s 2” less than his charge range!
The Seraphim and the Chaos Space Marine Squad fought their own battle, both showing their martial prowess.
Plaguemarines and Characters with the mark of Nurgle are really a tough bunch. Plaguebearers summoned with Plaguewind tie up regular troops easily and have a good chance of winning even without backup. And they get you victory points only when you kill off at least 3 of them!
The Repentia also showed their potential by wiping out the second Plaguemarine Squad in mere two turns and bringing down even the Chaos Sorceror. The battle showed also their weaknesses, especially their lack of armour and even more so eye protection. Conversion fields and Photon Flash Flares can really ruin the day of these ladies!
I’m almost always impressed by the Sisters in battle. Even with a greater daemon on the table, and no vehicles on their own side the Sisters lost by a mere 2 victory points.
Nevertheless I congratulate my Opponent to his hard earned first victory and a solid strategy.
