I will be building a Chaos fleet, but I have never played this game before. Any tips?

Find a BFG forum :D

BFG stuff goes for cheap as chips on Ebay.

I bought the boxed set.

Opened it up hoping it would be similar to Man O' War but in space...found out I was wrong. Closed box and never opened it since.

I would recommend going with a fleet of Light Cruisers (4-8 ships), 2-4 Medium Cruiers, and 1-2 Capital Ships. The Planet Kilelr isn't worth it, don't buy it, it's a total points sink.

I would recommend manuverable ships, in large numbers. You will need the larger capital ships for taking out the capital ships your opponent has.

Also, don't bother with assault shuttles, they aren't worth it. I would recommend lots of torpedoes. Then you can hit your opponent with a wall of torpedoes.

However, I haven't played BFG since 2001, so I never played against Necrons, Tau, or the newer Eldar vessels.

Chaos is pretty strong in BFG, their cruisers are top notch with lots of batteries. Go heavy on Murder and Carnage cruisers and you cannot go wrong.

Maneuver in formation and concentrate your firepower. Don't fight your enemies battle, make him fight yours.

A little closer look at the scheme:

Wow those are some awesome mini's. I take it those are Nurgle ships?

I don't play BFG, but the over all tactic is sound in most engagements.

Get two boxed sets, that'll give you enough ships, dice and little cardboard thingies. You get enough ships for a fair sized fleet of imperials and another one for chaos. The two main, and most balanced, lists. They may be a bit hard to find now, but when me and my friend bought them it was cheaper than getting the same amount of ships separately that you get in the boxed sets.

When it comes to concentrating firepower, I've heard that works well on everyone except Eldar. There, because of how their Holofields work, you're better off spreading your firepower to hit as many ships as possible each turn. However, never having actually played, be careful how much attention you give to my advice.

@ Caelwyn: Thanks, Im pretty sure two box sets will be easy enough to find on ebay, as for Imperial and Chaos, I think that was their plan all along.
One question though, are there Pre-Heresy ships?

It works very well against Eldar, especially because of their holofields. Their fields give a 2+ save against lances and ordnance, but barrage fire just gets shifted over on the gunnery table. Lots of battery fire is bane to Eldar.

I'm still new but I believe more of the pre-heresy ships fall into the Grand Cruisers range, some of those models are shared by both Imperial and Chaos.
