Coming late to the part here, but I think one important thing about Space Crusade for me was the Event, Order, and Equipment cards. The artwork was some of the best 40K stuff I've seen. Right up there with HeroQuest's.

I do really like the artwork! It captures that early nineties citadel feel when anything seemed possible and the 40k universe was set in stone as a 'brand'! I miss those days... Right before the red period!

Totally agree. But sorry, what do you mean by the "red" period?

I think the "red" period relates to the early to mid nineties painting style where models had lots of red painted on them. Red guns, helmets, pouches, boots etc. i think the 'Eavy Metal painters were on a red bonus, the more incongruously painted red items, the more they got paid! :)

Chickenbane is spot on. Right after Brian Ansell left the company in 1991 GW made a few changes to their business model in order to expand their customer base. As part of this they toned the sheer horror and violence of their universes to make it more accessible to a younger audience. Part of this was moving towards a more cartoon/comic style, a result of which was the red period.... When there was a heavy amount of red on everything they painted...

Studio Blood Angels army
Goblins with red spear shafts (why oh why)
Ultramarines and Dark Angeks with red bolters

Etc.

The Red period probably went on from late 1991 to 1998

You know, I never heard of it called the Red Period, but it makes total sense now that I look back on it. The era started, I think, when they introduced 2nd Edition. Almost all the models from that point on had red prominently painted on them. Even the spin off games like Man-o-War or even HeroQuest.

And to think, I used to admire all those paint jobs back then LOL

Yeah, I have fond memories of that period as its when I got into the hobby! I used to love the models in White Dwarf back then! I only heard it called the Red Period a few years ago, but I agree it is exceptionally appropriate!!!
