I was frustrated in my lunch break so I went to my local GW to vent; as ever it was manned by a lone individual who thought he was going to force me to by he latest boxset! I moaned tat the new craft world codex was only available online and that store space should be dedicated to it; I also had a good ten minute rant about the collapse of specialist games. When he foolishly asked me what should go to accommodate extra store space.... I was like 'clearly the pile of sh*t that is the hobbit!'

He looked at me in horror and said 'I like the hobbit; there's loads of us that collect it!'

My rage was boiling but I remained calm and said;

'Are there? Then why do you have one of the limited editions from release day still on your shelf over there? And why is the hobbit board covered in dust?' As be bumbled a response I couldn't contain myself and said;
'You sir; are an idiot! GW is running itself into the ground; alienating its loyal customer base and supporting a terrible game that exists only to support some terrible film licence. Look at the models; their crap as is the game! Now sell me some Black Spray while I lament the death of the hobby!'

He laughed.....then realised I wasn't joking and sold me a tin of over priced spray and I walked out!! Moron!

Having been on both sides of the GW staff and customer coin, I can understand your frustration with how the stores are run now. Other thing is the company MAKES you buy an "army" for all the major games. You have to remember, red shirts or blue or whatever color they are, they are just doing their job.

As for the death of the hobby. Nah, it will always be there, price hikes or not, if you love it stay if not leave. Necromunda may be gone or going but I can always find what I need through ebay, flea markets at cons or convert my own.

Also, you can get primer thats just as good or not better at a hardware store :D

Yeah many years ago before joining the Army I was a GW employee at my local store. But this was back in the day when we weren't pushed to force purchases on everyone who came in the store. It was good times of painting the stores army; chatting with customers and playing intro games, and to be honest we sold a fair bit as people appreciated the relaxed atmosphere of the store! Sadly those days are long gone!

As for the hobby always being there I hope so....I genuinely don't know what I would do if GW closed...it makes up the majority of activities I do in my spare time! However speaking to a few people (including the manager of my local store) things arent looking great.

Apparently for the first time last year they didn't turn that much of a on actual profit. It seems they were losing money and so took some drastic measures to streamline. I.e. single man stores; closing some stores; price increases; increasing the pace at which updates/codices/army books were released. These measures have all gone some way to keeping their heads above water, but they aren't long term sustainable; once you're down to single man stores there's not much more you can cut, you can't keep increasing prices as it will alienate your customer base (wraithknight - £70....really; if you look at the components then thanks to its design it is that much plastic involved....also as you say....primer bought anywhere else is half the price!).

Given their precarious situation, poor management and dubious retail decisions (over producing the Hobbit so that the limited editions are still in store; but under producing the Tau so that customers are waiting ages for out of stock products, it would seem that they are ripe for a corporate take over. One name that keeps cropping up is US toy firm HASBRO; which given their recent acquisition of WotC may be likely; so long as they left the IP alone then this may not be a bad thing, as an injection of cash and some new management could do wonders for the company. However my other fear is that a Private Equity firm purchases GW for as low a price as possible, strips it down to it's leanest form and then sells off it's constituent parts at a profit (this would include FW and BL as they are all subsidiaries of the parent company); this is quite a common practice in the city and if Tom Kirby isn't careful he is setting himself up for this sort of fate!!!

As an aside my mate from my old regiment is a keen space marine player and was home on leave yesterday. So he decided to pop into his local GW for a browse and to see if anything took his fancy! He text me to say that from the second he walked through the door he was accosted by pushy (and weird) sales staff who persisted in trying to sell him the new Eldar stuff; which he clearly didn't as want. He said eventually it got on his nerves so much he just left the store; this is ridiculous he's normally an impulse buyer so would have happily wandered around the shop and bought some stuff (that to be honest he probably didn't need) but now GW have lost that small amount of revenue. In truth I'm also reluctant to go in there (especially with my girlfriend) as I have to cross the barrier of over-eager spotty youths trying to entice me to buy the latest things for armies I don't collect; or worse; force feed me the Hobbit!!

Don't get me wrong; I love the hobby but I think GW needs to review the way it does business...rapidly.

Since 2009 the closing of stores and the one man shops have been the new way, I'm sure they will continue what they need to do to keep the business going, and the prices will keep rising.

The hobby will always be there, whether you play 2nd edition or 6th, so long as you play or just paint.

It's been probably 2 years since the last time I went in a GW. I'm also an ex GW woker and even back in erm 1994 they were getting pushy about core sales. All the managers were terrified as they had a 'mystery shopper' who would supposedly come in store to act like a bemused parent to see how many add on sales were being offered and it seems since then they have gotten either more pushy or more paranoid. If GW does go, then all their games will still be played and Warmachine, Kings of WAr or some other games system will fill the void. In a way I'll be glad as GWs annual price hike and disaffection with older gamers has annoyed me for years!

i just hate the pushy sales of the '10 commandments'. next time just tell them to cut the crap and they will walk away.

i just tell them i have a keen interest in necromunda and they soon walk off.

"hi wheres the skaven?"

"oh over here, so collecting a skaven army eh? can i interest you in..."

"i just want rats im making a necromunda gang"

"oh, oh, oh..."

"yeah see ya later then, and no i dont want your glue, i get 10 tubes for £1 round the corner".

Up until recently we had a really cool manager in our lone man GW store. He was a really chill guy, loved playing all sorts of games and wasn't pushy. I bought (&#$@!) loads of stuff from him, mostly stuff I didn't need as we would regularly have a chat that would turn in to ideas of random fun, not only for current games. Many of my mates would just go in to the store for a chat and regularly come out with stuff they never intended to buy.

He was an awesome chap and a good salesman. He did not work the GW way however, so they fired him. His replacement fits the GW stereotype. I have been in the store once. Will never go back.

I still play games with the old manager in our homes as he is an all round top bloke.
