Well I gave a reading to 6th edition rules, but I could not go beyond the damage allocation system for shooting. If I read it clearly the system is:
- I shoot with everything I have from a squad no another squad, using some way to remeber the various STR and APs of the shooting weapons.
- I roll to wound with all the weapons that hit, against the toughness of the majority of models in the target unit.
- Of all the wounding it I pick one after another, chosing among the "pool" the ones whose AP fits best my needs, and apply the hit to the closest model, and go on this way.

Frankly I don't like it.

Since the birth of 3rd edition I have the impression GW is doing some sort of "retro engineering" to the rules. I mean.. In my idea first come a good and realistic set of rules, then the game. Reading GW work I have the opposite idea.. A group of people sitting on a table and starting with "Ok, this time we need a set of rules allowing people to use at least 150 models in a 2-hours game. Let's find a way".

There are also things I like.. the book is impressive, superb graphics. I like the idea to be able to measure eveything anytime (but as I am good at guessing ranges in inches, it works against me!), I like the fixed set of "standard abilities" to apply to the units, the army composition (but not the alliances)...

Form what I have read, it is a good game probably, written with a clear purpose in mind, and that purpose I think it does accomplish well. But it's not my game. I think I'll stick to 2nd edition and all of its problems still for a time.

Now I go back to poke around the 'Ere We Go book! :)

Well I've been back from afghan for a while now and have had the opportunity to play about 20-30 games of 6th Edition.

At first I quite enjoyed it; it was no second edition and lacked the personality of that fine epoch in gaming; but it was better than 3-5 edition and made for a few afternoons of fun....

However then GW started bringing out the action figures....DreadKnight this; wraith knight that....look a riptide! Frankly they're ridiculous and really unbalance the game. Lets face it the wraith knight is basically a Titan (it's only one inch smaller than FWs warhound) and so unless you field something of a similar ilk things become very tough and little fun!

And then there's the f*+king flyers! That's real fun to play against; watching squadrons of unhittable planes swarm across the table to pound your army; thus forcing you to waddle down to GW to hand over a brief case full of used notes so that you can acquire your own weapon of mass destruction to thwart your opponents air power!

The whole thing feels like GW has designed it simply to sell more and more (expensive) models to their customers. It sort of makes sense for a business really; if you have a perfectly good Eldar army you probably aren't going to form out too much more money on models.... But the. Your mate turns up with his tau and a RipTide....suddenly you need a wraith knight in order to compete; and some flyers to bomb him. However corporate policy aside I'd like their hard core sales tactics to be a bit more subtle....I don't mind that they want to f*ck me; but I'd like them to sweet talk me first!!!

I've said previously if I want to play huge battles I'll play epic....but GW just discontinued that so I guess I won't. I suppose of I want fighters and air combat I could play Aeronautica Imperialis....oh no wait....FW just stopped supporting that too! Great!
