so recently the new tau and eldar came out. do you see a similar pattern with the new armies? is it me or do they all appear the same now?

hq

troops

flyers

big novelty monster

i hope the whole range doesnt get this dull. i dont think i will ever get a flyer myself, they appear to break the game.

I was wondering about flyers myself as well. They seem like something you can add to a game of Epic, but the scale of 40k doesn't leave much room for flyers on your averaged sized game table. Do most or all of the Flyers hover or something? If not, is their turn radius like a dime or something? I don't understand how they would 'realistically' work at that scale.

And the novelty monsters, what is the story behind that? Are we going mecha/robotech now?

Yeah;

The flyers are a bit weird. My mate has used his Valkyries a few times; but they hover; which is fine as they are basically 40k versions of the contemporary Harrier Jump Jet (a la Falklands campaign 1982). However it matters not as they have never survived past the first round of shooting!

As for the giant models....what a f*#king farce! I might just go and buy some action figures and paint them! I thought the Grey Knight DreadKnight was a bit stupid, but the Eldar Wraith Knight is really too much!!!

However as a solid second edition player I can say that for larger battles the sixth edition is a lot better than 4-5 and is actually quite enjoyable to play! (See my earlier battle report in this forum!)

the new flyers are not Valkyries, i would imagine the rules for those have changed though. you will need 6s to hit the new flyers in most cases. they can also leave the table and zoom about like nobodies business.
take necron fliers for example. you can field 10 with a standard chart quite easily and they have twin linked str 7 telsa cannons that do 4 shots with 2 extra if you roll 6s. no armor pen but who cares they are a solid choice for pissing your friends off.

i am all for having some larger models in a game. i liked chaos armies with a deamon or a gayknight dred knight. they make some armies more interesting, oh yeah dont forget nasty nid monsters! i think i have about 5 or 6 of those :P. however it is rather dull if every army has one, defeats the point if all the armies are the same.

That is exactly the issue! These flyers are ridiculously hard and will dominate the game if you don't counter the threat by having flyers of your own; or something anti-aircrafty! In a normal game (1000-2000 points) a single flyer would be okay; any more than that and things become unbalanced! I want to play 40k; not 'space marine duck hunt'

Additionally these giant models are sh*t! The Eldar one looks like an Inquisitor scale guardian and the Tau one looks like crises suit on steroids! They're just bone! And again they become the dominant force in a game unless you have your own Tyrannosaurus Rex equivalent! Again they should be apocalypse only! And the cost.... £70 for a wraith knight; I might just take up a heroin addiction; it will save money in the long run!! Or I might just borrow my mates 8 month old son; wrap him in tin foil and call him a wraith-shite!!

Hmmmm don't get me wrong I like big War machines; they're cool in both background and imagery; In fact there should be a special game just for them; with 6mm infantry on five man stands and Titans everywhere! That would be pretty EPIC!

If I ran GW I'd make such a game and I certainly wouldn't do something silly like tucking it away in a tiny part of my website called 'Specialist Games' for a decade; then quietly discontinue it when nobody was looking so I can support a piece of crap called 'The Hobbit' as I'm tied into some ridiculous licensing deal....that would be a stupid form of corporate suicide!!!!!

Its a cash cow type thing, everyone who wants to be competitive has to have the new-super-hard-shiny-death-monster-tank-murder-kill-apocalypse model. It has twin linked rerollable seven circle of hell cannons that actually destroy the ancestors of the army you're fighting giving you an autowin. Don't really play much 40k atm but it reminds me a bit of the daemons of chaos, chariot/cannon abortion. Same cost as an Empire Great cannon but its a chariot with Bloodletters. 'Buy it little boy, or the internet will laugh at you!".

I think that the brains in GW think tank can only come up with something more expensive to try to boost flagging sales. I myself am looking forward to the Imperial Guard Nuclear Gehanna Missile Launcher that can be fired from home by text to save time, it is only 25 points but unfortunately costs €300. :(

Well I can't believe it....I literally can't believe it! GW have read my posts; taken my points on board and decided to go in further into damnation with this weeks list of atrocities!

Wow Apocalypse has come out...not to make life better for gamers; but to suck money out of their pockets! Lets look at the items one at a time:

Khorne Lord of Shite: what the hell is this monstrosity? Genuinely WTF! It looked horrendous as an epic model in 1992; but at least it was hidden amongst the other 20 releases that came out per month and could be justified by the ancient production techniques and the fact it was in 6mm scale. This latest monstrosity has no such excuses! It's just horrendous! This piece of crap burns my eyes with the rays of 1,000 suns! And it can be yours for only £95.00!

Next....the Baneblade! It's an oldie and a classic; however it's just jumped £20 from £65 to £85. Admittedly you get a few extra components; but not 20 quids worth! This is another GW p*ss take!

The Necron Thing!
Agh....again this is a pile of shite! I don't know if it's the yellow paint scheme in this months white dwarf but the C'Tan in the middle of this looks like he's being viciously assaulted by an entire pack of instant noodles!!!!!! Have a look.... Again yours for a cheap £95!

Well that's pretty much it; a few extra scenery pieces and the rule book for GWs usual hefty price tag are also being released....can't wait!!!

Mate; don't get me started on the boxsets! The cost is astronomical! Have you seen the combined scenery package on the website....yours for a mere £1,152 ...... I've definitely got £1,200 to blow on some f*+king scenery! In fact it was £951 when it first got put up but it jumped £200 in two days....which is about right for GWs current rate of inflation!

What ever happened to making terrain out of misc stuff lying around the house like paper towel tubes, pringles cans and pink styrofoam?

Kids have it to easy these days :)

Amen to that brother!

I was just looking through my copy of Rogue Trader and there is an entire section in the back dedicated to making terrain out of bits and pieces! It's awesome; granted it looks a bit crappy compared to the bastions of today....but it had character and cost 99pence!! I miss the good old days!!!!

I played 6th edition until quite recently but the fliers arms race annoyed me. If you dont want to buy one you have to buy fortifications to stop them, or you cannot compete. Tis more than a little silly. I generally do alright in games, giving as good as I get but my Necron opponent tabled me by turn 3, 4 times in a row because of the new doom scyth.... a s10 line of death does not do well for elite spacemarine armies.

Now with the emergence of the over sized walkers I can imagine yet another arms race. So I have said f*ck it, and want to play necro again.

At this rate, there has got to be a new up and coming mini game that will jostle with GW dominance and knock them down a peg or two....right? I mean....right??

I do have to say though from a modeling and painting stand point the walkers and flyers are really cool, but from a gaming perspective, just a bit outrageous for the scale I would think.

yeah i totally agree, you cant deny they are not making cool models. sadly they are made with the wrong intentions.

sorry to hear about the annoying necron guy. i refuse to buy 1 or 2 because i like playing with my friends and that model is far from friendly!

McCragge: I have yet to see a new game that captures me as well as the 40k background does. The sole reason 40k has been in my life for 20 years is that the stories, artwork and background are so damn cool....

I like infinity as a games system. It is swift, elegant and the perfect scale for me. Unfortunately I just cannot connect with the background so my interest wanes within days of getting (or re-finding) the bug. The models are variable but there are some really awesome ones, which generally outnumber the bad ones.

As for the new models, the some of them are nice. Others are bloody terrible, such as the over sized Khorne Tonka toy. For me, Forgeworld is superior in almost all aspects and because I am only interested in building 2nd ed style armies the cost of it doesn't put me off too much.

Squevil: It is distinctly unfriendly but my regular opponent does play hard and seems to have inexhaustible supplies of money, so I am never sure what I am facing. One day it could be warriors in arks making an av13 wall with air support, the next it could be 9 wraiths led by a destroyer lord with air support or foot slogging hordes of immortals with air support (see a theme there?). As my funds are limited by reality much more he knows he will be either facing terminators in raiders or tactical marines in rhinos. Sadly it has turned in to a game of who has the biggest wallet due to extreme rock paper scissors.

The answer to me is to play games from the 90's, which weren't designed by 12 year olds, high on sugar, spurred on by greedy marketing people... which is exactly what I intend to do. :)
