Always so hard to choose favorite movies... I guess I'll go with some of the ones I felt the need to actually have

Goodfellas
Hero
Full Metal Jacket
Natural Born Killers
A Scanner Darkly

Okay. As I work in the last video store in the City of Brotherly Shove, this is the sort of question where the answers will change before I finish. Void where prohibited by law.
Here goes:

1. Time bandits
2. Alien 3 [director's cut - theatrical cut kills a couple of great performances & makes no sense]
3. The Good, The Bad, & the Ugly [ it's korean remake The Good, The Bad & the Weird is a good film with some new twists ]
4. the Third Man
5. Miller's Crossing

Actually these may be my most watched 5 films * click*
See, the answers have just reset & changed themselves again! Damn!

Also , you should see Oldboy and Deathrace [or even better the original Deathrace 2000]

ohhh Vex great Top 3. Can't agree more about Alien 3. I always liked the first release, but then I saw the directors cut. So much better than the theatrical it's almost a totally different movie.

You need to bust this up based on genre...

Shawshank has got to be high... as for Alien 3 I'm too biased: the best paper I ever wrote in university (personal opinion) was on the original, which is a cinematic phenomenon. However Aliens was always, nay, ALWAYS a childhood fav, one of those quote every line, wanna be as badassed as a space marine sorta flicks... "How do I get outta this chickensh*t operation?" Nonesense. Sign me up. Burke is a legendary douche, Cpl Hicks also happens to be John Conner's father and is the leader one could respect, Vasquez could give a forest wood and Apone is just nasty. Like definitive nasty. Top it off with the greatest plight for gender equality that is Ellen Ripley...

Cant argue that Eugenestealers didn't exist pre 1986. Gold.

AND... I can only assume Lords of Dogtown was a type-o and had meant to be Dogtown and Z-Boys... great documentary, sets fire in the loins... feature film modelled after it? Pass.

I think I saw the Third Man in the list? Ballin', Orson Wells would've been a dice roller for sure.

I am a firm believer that the topic is too broad. What about top 2 of a specific genre?

Eg:
Zombie comedy: Army of Darkness and Zombieland
Zombie horror: Dawn of the Dead ('04) and 28 Days Later

All I can contribute is,

"Saigon... (&#$@!); I'm still only in Saigon... Every time I think I'm gonna wake up back in the jungle"

no lords of dogtown was the film about the documentry. its jsut a story and not, well, a documentry. it was better in my opinion. as far as real skateboard films there are far greater ones than the documentry and many have legendary status in the skateboard comunity, before dvds and the internet ruined the classic vhs ones
