I am developing a one-sided widows peak as I get older. It's going to start looking awkward unless I start doing something about it.

One of the options I have been considering is just shaving my head bald.

I was curious if anyone here has done that and if they could share any advice with someone that has never shaved his head bald before.

I will continue doing research into this matter of course, but I like to read some true anecdotes and personal advice as well.

Thanks

-dr R.

I've not shaved my head myself, but have had other people do it on several occasions.

I had considered keeping it for a time, but after realising that would mean shaving practically every other day with my hair's rate of growth, that idea rapidly lost appeal.

When you do it for the first time I'd advise doing it in Spring, the shocking cold of Winter wil put you off. As will the inevitable sun-burn from a Summer shave.

And cocoa butter is a great moisturiser :)

Depending on the shape of your skull, you will either look sage and warrior-monk like, or a giant douche. And it's hard to tell which until after you've done it. :D

The most important question, of course, is what does the wife think?

Having kept a shaved head for a good five months last year, I can say this:

Use a 1 clip first and see how you like it, if its not short enough go for the razor, I recommend waiting a few days before going full Yule Brynner though.

Good part about being bald is you never have to worry about your hair.

I don't shave my head per se, but I do get it cut very short. I've got a lovely receding hairline that just doesn't look right with anything longer than 3/4" or so up front, so I usually just get it cut to 1/2" or shorter. In the summer, I tend to go very short, 1/4" or even 1/8". I've gone as far as going with clippers only, no attachments, but never actually used a razor for a completely clean shave.

As feeder said, it all depends on the shape of your head whether you can pull it off or not. Krug's suggestion of starting longer and going shorter is a good one. Just make sure you start with even longer than you think you would like. It takes very little time to change attachments and go over it again. It takes quite a while to grow that 1/2" back out if you look goofy.

Mohican?

Seriously, I trim the sides down to 3, keep the top and back at 8. Mohican naturally fits a widows peak, and it's just this side of respectable enough for work

Sorry for the thread-nomancy, But i shave my head and have been doing it ever since I started going bald. A widow peak as much like the OT but mne had been going from both sides and a bald spot in the back.
I shave it right down after i shave my face.

If you have hair to start off with, use a pair of "clippers" if you dont you can go to a hair stylus/barber and asked them to shave it down for you and you can continue the upkeep yourself at home.

The main thing is to keep the skin wet to aviod shaving bumps and to moistuize afterwards.

Since the thread has already been resurrected, the crowd wants to know: Dr. R - are you shaving your head? If so, how's it going? If not, why not?

Actually, after a heated discussion the "veto" from my missus lead to my decision to sport a haircut, similar to my avatar picture.

I intentionally had the other side of my widow's peak trimmed to match.

If my hair was thinner and darker I would look more like Vincent Price.

-Thanks for asking.

Hahaha, I had that same discussion at one point w/ the wife. I told her that if she was so dead set on my having hair to cut, she could cut it.

She took out the clippers, #2 guard up the side (which is what I'd been doing), and about 5 seconds in said "Oops. You can shave your head now."

Vincent Price gives you a lot of material to work with, though, too.

Shaved heads look better with facial hair, but thats just my opinion.

I shaved my head in college for 100 bucks. I already had a pixie cut, so I have no idea why the guys in my dorm didn't think I would do it. I never went BALD bald because on a girl--ew. If your hair is long than a inch or two, you need to cut that carefully with a pair of scissors. Maybe get help on that. After that, I suggest a number 2 or 3 guard on a set of clippers. Good luck.

My fantastic crush on a young Sinead O'Connor disagrees with you.
