I recently started watching the original version of the Chinese epic "Red Cliff".

This got me wondering what other movies other folks are watching out there and what is on "their list" of things to watch in the future.

Movies I'd like to watch later are:

1. The Great Train Robbery
2. The Human Centipede
3. 12 Angry Men
4. Amelie
5. Delicatessen
6. WALL-E
7. Toy Story 3
8. Roshomon
9. Monsters, Inc.
10. Ponyo

Feel free to share reviews, and I recommend everyone whose never heard of "The Human Centipede" to look it up. It's an Oscar contender. (he heh heh sarcasm.)

Also, the most recent movie I saw that I enjoyed was "Kick-Ass" a great film and it's a shame it didn't do better in the US theaters.

Kick Ass is indeed excellent, one of the best films I've seen for a long time. Currently looking forward to Predators & Inception.

As for Human Centipede I downloaded it out of interest and largely ignored it once I'd put it on, complete crap.
Not even so bad is good. Just so bad it's bad.

Last week I finally got myself a copy of Akira & Jin Roh, some classic Manga goodness so going to watch them soon :)

I agree, Kick ass was...well...kick ass. I am looking forward to Scott Pilgrim vs the world. I have high hopes for that movie.

I liked the settings and scenery of Akira and Jin Roh. However, I never really appreciated Akira the same way most anime fans do.

As for Jin Roh, I enjoyed watching it, but the love story/ "Red Riding Hood" bit is a little elementary and contrived. I once got into a very loud discussion with a gamer about Jin Roh. He was ripping in to it, saying things like, "That movie was terrible, it's just Red Riding Hood with a gimmicky Jap/Nazi background. How can you appreciate something so boring and elementary?!" Then I would retort, with, "What films have you produced/animated/or otherwise developed? You have no call to sh!t all over this film in a public forum. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about, if you don't like it fine, just don't belittle me and don't use your loud voice to deter others from watching it. It's a good rental and I concede that it's not Oscar worthy, but calm down."

Sorry for the rant, I like Jin Roh, but take it with a grain of salt.

BTW- I know Human Centipede is terrible, I still want to see it for the gross out factor. I'll probably put it in the same category as "Visitor Q".

Come on folks, whose watching what?

Where the Wild Things Are. Uh, what? What was that? Also, Tony Soprano's voice is far too distinctive. An amazing visual treat, but no story.

Ponyo. Quite decent, very watchable, but doesn't quite stack up against the Totoro/Mononoke/Spirited genius fantasticary that Miyazaki is so justly famous for.
Some of the voice acting is a bit crap (no, not you, Fey. I'm looking at you, Neeson)

The Crazies. No. I'd give it a miss.

Avatar. Just like the rest of the world.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Depp version). Great! I hated everybody in the movie, except Charlie Bucket and his dear old Grandad. Wonka is weird as all get out.

The Informant. Very good. Matt Damon is unrecognizable and brilliant. His interior monologues absolutely kill. Bonus, it's a true story.

Not a movie, but I watched The Big Fat Quiz of the Year (04 thru 08 ) on youtube. Hosted by Jimmy Carr and featuring a whole bunch of other hilarious Brits, it is roflcopters all round. Highly recommended for people intelligent enough to "get" the jokes even if they don't know all the Brit politicians/celebs.

While I'm on the subject, I'd recommend watching clips of Q.I., Mock the Week, 8 out of 10 Cats, Would I Lie to You, and others. (look in the righthand box in your Youtube browser.) BBC panel comedy shows kick the everlovingshit out of anything we call funny over here.

Bioshock 2. Wait, that's not a movie. Still great though, and it's on my TV.

To Do list:
Zombieland
Alice in wonderland (Depp version)
Der Untergang (hard sell for the wife though)
Beyond the Lighted Stage (Rush doc)
Death Comes to Town (KITH mini series)
Unthinkable

@Dr :) no need to apologise for a rant mate, tbh it's been years since I saw Jin Roh so other the WWII themed military I can remember much more.

Human Centipede doesn't have any gross out factor tbh, that's part why i watched it, but it's just dull. watching Spice World would have a higher gross out factor lol

BBC comedy is the greatest comedy in the world, allow me to point you in the direction of BBC Radio 4 & 7. check out some of the classics on there, pure genius like The Goon Show, I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue & I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again.

Avatar was just meh for me. I wasn't blown away by the battle scenes and the story dulled my brain into submission.

Just saw Predators the other night. Good flick!
I have also recently seen (for the first time) The A-Team, Zombieland, Up in the Air, The Program, They Live (although I had seen it before, I was so young though that I didnt remember it), The Thing, Rock n Rolla, Survival of the Dead (stay away from this), Tyson, Whip It(better than expected), The Hurt Locker. Yes I watch a shed-load of movies, its the only way that I can paint or do terrain without gouging my eyes out with a rusty spoon.

12 Angry Men, Roshomon and Amelie:
Amelie: Being French, and being a big fan of Jean-Pierre Jeunet (to the extent that I LOVED Alien Resurrection), I really liked this movie.

Roshomon: Saw it ages ago, but it's Kurosawa, you just can't go wrong, take a look at Yoshimo as well (if you haven't already done so)

12 Angry Men: Not one for courtroom thrillers, but this one is great. Good characterization and great dialogue.

Failing that, here is my current to watch list:

La Horde
Mutants
Cigarettes and Zombies
Inception
Appaloosa
The Express
The Blindside
The Host
Mulberry Street
Clockwork Orange (yes I know, argh!)

@Chaerea81-

I've always understood that when US films are translated into French they usually change the titles, but the US title is included in the advertising. However, my experience is form 1998. Is that still true? Just curious.

@screamingabdab

I agree that *some* Brit comedy is very good. Black Adder should be watched BY EVERY SINGLE US Comedy writer. The dialog and jokes in the Black Adder series (especially 2,3, and 4) are BRILLIANT.

However, I don't like most NEW British comedy, well at least what's new over here in Washington DC. I watched "Little Britain", "Jeeves and Wooster" "The Mighty Boosh" and "That Mitchell and Webb Show" were just totally lost on me.

I heard about these shows from a friend from London originally, and he said that there were/are very big shows. A lot of the references were just lost on me. Especially Jeeves and Wooster, there was an episode where the gag is Wooster is so drunk he sings an inappropriate song in front of an older crowd. Not knowing the song, the kind of people in the crowd, or the context of the setting left me with no laugh.

I will look into the panel comedies that you guys have mentioned.

Just stay away from the US Network Comedies, they're mostly AWFUL. "Big Bang Theory", "2 and a half Men", and "The Office" are f*cking cr@p. Just stay away from them.

Please forgive my rant, and if you like these shows this is not meant as a dig on you or your personal preferences.

It's just a rant, and I'm prone to them as of late.

lol well yeah comedy is very personally dependent i guess. Little Britain i liked the 1st series but after that they just repeated the same gags over & over.

The Mighty Boosh tbh I'm not surprised you didn't get it, it's just bloody weird lol

As for US comedy the last thing from your shores i found funny was 30 Rock. But like you say most Network comedies are awful, just like the majority of prime-time "comedy" shows here.

@ Remulack

More and more they just keep the American titles...

@ KRUG

Pandorum is a good laugh, some pretty good ideas in it. Dennis Quaid is okay.
Saw Inception the other day and had a blast. Rather innovative.

The crazies is another one on my "to see"list...just never got around to watching it all.

Did anyone see "The Signal"?

It's kind of like "The Crazies", it's a Brit movie (I think), where someone starts transmitting a mysterious sound over the television, cell phone, and radio waves/lines. Then 90% of the population just goes apesh!t and starts killing folks.

Here is the imdb link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780607/

I read "The Road" a couple of years ago, and I thought the movie was "okay", only moderately interesting, and a bit dull at times.

@KRUG_666 How does the Road compare to Book of Eli?

I understand Book of Eli has a lot of plot holes, but I still watch it when given the opportunity.

BTW- Red Cliff is very good, but it is INCREDIBLY long.

The Road had the most realistic approach to the Apocalypse which is why I enjoyed it, that and its a father and son movie.

Book of Eli reminded me of the Just A Pilgrim comic, loads of action with an interesting story line and surprise ending.
